Title: Re: How to attach pictures
Post by: GoVertical on November 14, 2012, 09:37:13 PM
Hi, I am using paint to reduce photos so I can post them. The smallest I can reduce a photo is one percent, that creates a file size of 101 K which is to large to post. Is there another method that I can use to reduce the photo to be small enough so I can post them?

I have the same problem with "bitmap files" You will need to convert to jpeg, I use Mircrosoft Image Composer for this.

In Paint, your not going to be saving to jpeg, the file size will be huge in paint.

You need to find a program, that you can insert the image, then crop it, at 480 by 640 or whatever.

here are some examples-

GoVerticle -

I always use tinypic.com.  You can choose 640x480 and then it spits out the [img] code so you can paste it in your message.  Tinypic has yet to fail me yet since I have joined this forum.

I guess it also doesn't use space on the field lines server, if that's worth anything.

I've done a little update to image posting guidelines, here:  https://www.fieldlines.com/index.php/topic,149480.0.html (https://www.fieldlines.com/index.php/topic,149480.0.html)
The posting rules have changed, and I've added some instructions to help members use the image posting features.
There is much less need to resize photos before uploading, now.  The site can re-size them for you.
Title: inline posts

Inline images work better for the archive than end of posts images.

End-of-post option has been disabled entirely, you no longer have to select the inline attachments manually :)

TA;
I also noticed the cute little GO UP button at the bottom of the post(s) too.
Nice little add-on.

Yeah I was going through some attachments settings (got a question about them for Jeremy later) and while I was at it I checked some other things and it was simply disabled for some odd reason ;D

I just posted some pictures.
The change has a little side-effect.
Used to be: When you selected your photo, you then could select from the list to choose "inline expandable".  Doing that put a bit of text into the body of the message that looks a lot like this: {attach=1} except it has square braces.

When posting now, I can't do that action, and nothing makes the {attach=1} appear.  I have to type that in manually after the image has been selected.

Not all users will know to do that.

Ah for goodness sake there's an onclick event on the... PFFFFT, I'll have another look later today. Meanwhile, temporarily reverted :/
Title: Re: How to attach pictures

Right, at the moment the first attachment will work fine and the {attach=1} will pop up the moment you click on the dropdown (although it's not a real selection, it has to be clicked because it's a javascript command). However, starting from the 2nd attachment that command doesn't register and doesn't add the {attach=2}. Need to figure out why, you would think it's the same code copy/pasted but it's not, there's quite a bit of stuff behind it starting from checks whether the user can post the attachment at all, if it's moderated, if he isn't trying to post too many attachments per post (so there is a count function) and all of this combined returns that "2" bit. It's not as easy as I thought it would have been ;D
Multiple clicks on the first box are allowed though, but they will always return {attach=1}, you just have to change the number for each attachment... For now.

Ha! Got it, it works now :) Also changed the text itself so it's more clear.

Good catch Sparweb as usual, thanks! And sorry for the temporary issue :P This topic might need to be updated to reflect this much easier method though :)

Yeah I can see that having super heavy images crashes the server, it's just lack of server power... I did mention this host is questionable :/ I tried to increase php execution time and to display any error but it just doesn't show anything.

And... Yes, that last image is me ;D

OK
It functions a little differently, but it's better.
When clicking the list-box you would expect a list to open, and one does for a millisecond.  But there's only one item in it so not really much point, now.

Any interest in keeping the alternative option?  Used to be in the list-box named (something like) "attach to end-of post".
Any interest in changing the list-box to a simple button to click?
Perhaps name it "insert image" to make this similar to other sites?

No.

That's kind of what it already is, I could sort of "prettify" it but that's about it. Later anyway, going to sleep.

Whatever suits you guys best, this is really easy to change :)

Flavio what are the limits on image size.
I don't know, there is no hard cap.
also can you make a warning that image size has been exceeded
No because it just crashes the server, if it crashes I can't say "ehy, don't crash and show this instead", it crashes and that's it. It's kind of like a middle finger ;D
Now to be realistic this still shouldn't be an issue because to make it crash I had to upload pictures that were 9MB each, 4000*4000px or something, super high definition (the guys that take pics of people at the track are no joke with cameras). In a real application this shouldn't happen, I haven't seen anyone posting pictures of such stupid high quality, it was some kind of heavy stress test on my part - reason being it's generally good for an admin/developer to know the server limits, even though in this case I can't really draw an accurate line so to speak.

Aaand done, now it no longer flashes the dropdown and it's an actual button. In some browsers it might show a small arrow (it's still a list), although on most browsers it will look like a simple button, I even made it look like the post/preview ones, with same hover effects :)
I made the text to say insert image now, this one can be really whatever, to me it should be fine like this :)

P.S.: you might have to clear your cache, I flushed the forum one but... Yeah.

Hey JW, notice how I pointed out in the message above this one that I thought your last post was posted to the wrong thread.

Then I noticed that I've never actually used the site software to move an errant post from one thread to another.
So I gave it a try, chasing yours with my own previous reply from the "H-Darrieus (VAWT)!" thread, through the Recycle Board, then to the Working With Images board, and then merging them up with this How To Attach Pictures thread.

Seems to have worked as intended.
OK
That was fun.

You don't necessarily have to move something to the recycle board to move it like that, you can also click on "Split topic", next to the "Remove" button for any single post and it will let you select individual posts too if you so desire :) There are multiple ways to do things - moving to recycle board and then pick them up, merge directly or split topic function. One of the three will 100% do whatever you want to do with a thread :P

here's what I found

https://www.fieldlines.com/index.php?action=kitsitemap&board=5.50
If you look at the list on left side and click one, you will see that topic is totally intact.

There is one of every category we need to make a copy on CD this may hold up to 50 or we could use something else to store this on. While things are good we need to do this.
Title: Re: How to attach pictures

I'm unable to post pictures.

When I click submit, I get "path cannot be empty" error.  If I try to submit a second time (even if I delete the attach reference and clear the file from the upload) another error pops up: "you already submitted this post!".

It gets stuck there if I don't back out to the forum, re-open the thread, and try to post again, fresh.

For the same reasons I can't attach screen-shots of the problem, but I did take a couple. :/

Hopefully Flavio will see this. When we were finished with all work we did I took him off the PHP database. I did this so no one can get blamed if something bad happens. Also he wouldn't accept any ,payments for work being done, I don't like that. He is a professional sub contractor for us.
