Title: Modifying Car alternator
Post by: guruji on November 04, 2009, 12:08:53 PM
Hi guys I saw on youtube a guy modyfied a car alternator by removing the turning coil with two speaker magnets.

Is this not the most easy and efficient one to acquire a  wind generator than building one from scratch as it is said in work force?

Thanks

Hi

Speaker magnets have their poles end to end not round the perimeter I would be very skeptical as to its efficiency.

I messed with alternators for nearly 12 months and decided it was a waste of time, I even tried re winding them, they need to turn too fast to do anything useful.

Read on here about car alternators even the commercialy modified ones, also the back bearing is normally a bush and wear out quite quickly.

try a truck alt--big bearings -- front and back--bigger lams for more wire..

this one has 42 winds outer coils-maybe #18 wire..[picts at photobucket-cant upload here !!!!!!!!!]

inner coils are 50 winds--lighter gauge wire..

two three phases--9 and 12 combo--two sets of nine coils--12 mags[24acually]

4 rects--2 per for each set of nine coils--

with just the one set of nine i could light up a 50watt bulb-about 8 volts..turning by hand..

should make for a nice little alt........will post story when done--maybe-cant seem

to upload any picts here.............

no you did not comramise your gallery on photobucket people can look at it but they cannot change it or mess with it it is password protected and you did not give out the password. anytime you link a picture from one of those sites a person can trace it back to your home gallery anyway if they want..... but  they cannot hurt nothing by doing that just look at your pictures.

Hi Tanner0441 you're right that speakers has their poles end to end but this guy inserted the magnets under those alt rotor teeth so that the magnets act on the sides of the rotor.

I think this guy done it right as it should be with the least of work force.

If I have an alternator in hand I try this.

Thanks

Hi

Many years ago I was sent on a course by my employer to learn about alternators, they were only just coming into general use. After briefly covering dynamos we moved on to alternators and the first thing pointed out to us was the size of the pulley on both.  Dynamo 3 to 4in alternator 2in the alternator has a design speed of 2,000 RPM the smaller pulley ensures the thing charges at engine idle speeds.

we covered the shape of the rotor pole pieces pointed, reason giving when they used the more efficient square pole pices the alternator sounded like a siren.

So good luck with what your doing but please excuse me if i am sceptical. if you are succesul I will be happy to copy what youve done.
