Found this in my lawn mower
« on: June 28, 2006, 06:58:49 PM »
I was a bit surprisd to find this familiar device in my lawn mower. (Kohler 14 hp)

According to the book it is a 3amp 35vdc (open ckt @ 3500rpm)alternator.  Wired single phase.

18 coils with (I believe) 13 wraps of 16awg over laminated cores.

These magnets are kind of different in that they are magnetized with the ends being the same pole and the middle the opposite one.  (-NSN-SNS-NSN-SNS-NSN-SNS-) Making 18 coils on 18 poles.

Might be able to turn it into something useful when the engine goes TU.

Which brand, year engine is it?   what is the outer diameter of the stator?   Looks interesting enough to look at some garage sales for a used unit.

This is a 1996 Kohler CV14S "COMMAND SERIES" (happens to be on a John Deere STX46 mower).

The stator looks to be about 6 or 7 inches accros.  Sorry but I would have to take it apart again to get a  more precise measurement.  I believe several mower companies used this same engine.  I'm pretty sure anything from CV11 to CV16 have a similar charging system.  Actually the service manual says most of them have 15 amp charging systems. (maybe mine is too)

Check the harness coming out of it.  You may find 2 circuits wound in there.  Charging and also a lighting circuit.

This machine doesn't have lights and there are only 2 wires from the stator coil arrangement out to the rectifier/regulator.

That is considerably beefier than most of the set-ups I've seen. Still not real strong with ceramics but keeps the battery up. My 16HP Briggs takes about an hour run to recharge one start.
