Big speaker basket apart.
« on: March 22, 2007, 03:28:02 AM »
I finaly took the 15" speaker apart today. The huge voice coil is in perfect shape.

The flex leads gave up. I found several burnt spots in all 4 flex leads.

I'll be cutting the fiberglass discs at exactly 15". I'll stack up enough to acomidate proper thickness dictated by the magnets not yet determind?

I would like to do the 14 magnet per 12" disc and 11 coils. Need to do some measureing on magnet size? To determin if coil size will fit within the 15" confines?

I'd like to do the small wedge magnets I used in my yellow 8" dual rotor? I'm however several short.

I'm thinking about a 1" diameter shaft for this one? The 10.75" end plate discs are very nice. 1 is 5/16" thick the other is 3/8" thick. I'll use those with a 12" speaker basket.

Heres a couple picture of the basket, nice and deep.

That wouldn't happen to be from a 15" AudioBahn would it?

Yep, an older style 1508. They did the same magnet configuration previusly tryed by Focal.

That magnet circut had a sirius amount of magnetic flux. I use 8 very simular Audio 15" at 14 KW in my Astro van.

If My magic wand hadn't blown a voice coil I could release you from your speaker curse . But you wouldn't  want to let  all that hardware go to waste. Anyhow .I can't wait to see that hub now .

I used to have a 12" Flat piston Audiobahn.  It was quite loud, I belive the magnet on the thing weighed like 35lb, 1500W RMS or something like that.  Thoes are quite heavy duty subs when you get in the upper serries.  Have you ever seen their 36"??

I've not seen the 36" in person. We had some literature that showed a young lady sitting in the center of that sub.

We do have an early Hartley 24" at our store on display. We also used 4 Fane 24" subs in one of our demo vans.

You might be able to make one of those DanB size alts with the 36" LOL.

I'm in the hunt and search mode now for the alt parts for this 15"/12" dual rotor.

So far I have the speaker basket, two 12"X1/4" steel discs, pipe to hold bearings, 1" shaft, fiberglass stator sheet, wire, reson, fullwave bridges.

I'm not sure if I'll try to reuse magnets I allready have or buy new. I'd like to use a wedge shape magnet wich I have but I'm a few short?

This will be my heavyest dual rotor so far.
