hello all i am new to wind power,i made a vawt and it is flying.so i made a stator with 6 coils and 6 magnets the coils have 1 in and 1 out how would you wire it up ? and do the magnets go n-s-n-s-n-s ?

thanks for the help.

Jasoncpg, I am pretty new too, so I want to be helpful.

Yes, the magnets should be mounted on the spinning rotor NSNSNS, but there are many problems with your stator.

Each magnet should be smaller than the hole in the center of the coil, but if your magnets are smaller, and they are spaced out evenly, then they will not be over the proper coil legs at the proper time.

Since all the coil legs are evenly spaced out...If you doubled the number of magnets, you "might" be able to get a small amount of one-phase AC, but I hear one-phase has a lot of vibration.

If your VAWT is spinning, you probably know its RPM's are not very fast. It looks like you have used very fine wire in the coils.

I don't want to discourage you. but if you look at working PMA's they are almost all 3-phase. To get 3-ph you need 4 magnets for every 3 coils (per rotor) 3-coils/4-magnets, 6C/8M, 9C/12M, 12C/16M. The rotor needs to be steel, and thick enough that a steel paperclip does not hold onto the back (when a magnet is on the front)

Adding a second steel rotor with the same number of magnets (reversed) on the opposite side of the stator really helps output.

The sides of the coils can touch each other. Look for pics of existing PMA's and compare the layouts.

Hey Spinningmagnets,

The coils should be slightly smaller than the width of the magnet, but slightly longer on the length. Where length is on the diameter. Hope this helps!

hey jason,

this site is mostly about horizontal axis wind mills.

they are a bit different than an alternator built for verticals.

i have been studying here for about five years and have learned a lot.

as you read the other posts you can do a google search on any terms you don't understand.

search the posts of an early member named electric ed he posted a lot of fine color illustrations on the relationship of the coils and mags.

what are the dimensions of your mill?

are your mags on a steel disk?

you gave no  information about the magnet dimensions or  what the spacing is

i checked out your photo files the coil looks like hey would be fine for a single rotor single phase stator.

that's not the best layout but hey, it's your first one. have some fun

i have two small drag vertical mills up right now.

they are dual rotor, 16 poles

single phase, 16 coils.

if you want to talk about vertical mills this is a place you can check out

He has not posted in about 4 or 5 years but his stuff is still there. Hope he just drifted on to other interests and did not pass away or something.

He posted some nice, easy to understand drawings back in the early days of this forum.
