It sounds like it is pure water, but the gunky stuff in my dehumidifier is fairly evil.

Dust, etc, makes it less than desirable, IMHO.

May be OK if it was filtered through a coffee filter?

I recall someone believing it would be contaminated with some kind of corrosion or metals from the condenser coils.

Not sure what a Quid = in US$, but distilled battery water is not very expensive per year.

And batteries are expensive.

If the batteries are using much water, the controller could be substandard, or the batteries are nearing the end of their service life.

Looks really clean, maybe not worth risk then,

batts not using loads water, just that a quid

saved there is a quid spent on something else,

A quid is a £pound,

Anything for free sounds good for me,

Hi

We used to fit dehumidifyers to the boats on the marina for the winter and if the evapourator coil is made from aluminium (aluminum for the US) then there is a chance that the oxide from the coil can contaminate the water.  You could do a soluble solids test, take a small amount of water into a petri dish or similar and warm it gently when the water has all evapourated you will see any contaminant remaining in the dish.

I have also heard of people using melted ice from the freezer, in tat case if the ice is thick enough you could scrape it without going through to the evapourator.

I personaly would pay for demin water £1 is cheaper than one battery, if you use a lot of demin water buy it in 5 gal bottles from a garage  or chemical supplyer, or invest in a reverse osmosis unit about £160 for gallons of the stuff.

Might try that evaporating trick, pretty obvious

when somebody points it out, suppose rain water

has to much crap in it,probly loaded with carbon eh,

Not that desp or tight to go scraping from a freezer

even if i had one lol, nah i mean every time i empty

his tray 3 times a week yeah quite a damp boat,i must

chuck 3 pints away seems a waste if it is pure water,

Hi

A point many people with boats and camper/caravans miss is keep the air temp above dew point and you don't need dehumidifyers. I let my camper cycle on a stat at between 6 to 9 C and never have condensation. I use a 1KW fan heater so it stirs the air up nicely as well.

You can't however top batteries up with dry air which moves away from the origional question....

Yuk.

Distilled water sterilised in the jug  is cheap, and you don't very much per year.

Your batteries cost FAR more than a quid each.

Feed them with pure distilled water.

Guys.. you're all here I think because you have wind turbines or RE setups.

Most of these setup would have dump loads.

Steal a stainless steel pot from the missus' kitchen ,find a length of s/steel tube, wrap a coil into it about the middle, connect one end to your pot ,the other to a jar and put the coil in a tub of cold water.Use the heat from the dump load to heat water in the pot and - voila- you now have your own still and can make as much distilled water as you need.

Best of all it is free.

Great Idea. Man I hope that I could ever get that amount of power beeing dumped. that would be my dream. maybe the guys with the bigger turbines can use the idea. some use the dump to heat their water and us it in heat exchangers to heat their homes. basicly the same thing. But I like the Idea because I Have very Hard water. and this could make My cooked food and drinks taste a heck of alot better.
