Subjects need fixed!
« on: October 13, 2004, 04:48:01 PM »
There seems to be a problem that when replying to a post often the added RE:  will make the subject too long and the post fails.

This has been happening along time, I remember earlier this year many of us were losing posts because of it. It's still happening. Alot of the guys had some good answers for questions I beleave that had been lost back then due to aborted posts for this reason.

Can you somehow make the RE: not count as part of the subject when posting a reply or maybe add about 5 charactors to the number allowed for the subject if it's a reply or something.

The page that comes up when the post fails looks far too much like the normal page after posting an excepted post. If not paying close attention it's easy to click for frontpage or like I do the back button a couple times and then the post is lost.

Great forum and people, but the program itself is much harder to use than most forums I been on. Hard to find replies also if not really knowing the program well for this forum.

Thanks, maybe that'll stop some lost posts.

Is there anyway the board e-mails reply notices? That's a feature I use alot on other forums I'm on. Get notified on the first reply after you post in a subject or a new subject then no more e-mail notices for that subject till after you visit it again.

That works realy nicely and also a great way to keep track of subject that have info you need, just never delete the e-mail notice :)

I have many saved notices like that involving computer repairs and problems and techy stuff. Would be nice to do that here also.

Hmm, just tried posting the above, and did not add my own subject line, none was auto filled in either so I got the error, now it's filled in with the RE: again.

I see what you are talking about. Am working on the problem; If I can't find a way to fix it I can increase the subject field limit....you can however get around the problem, I think, by deleting the excess chars that the program adds into the subject line when RE: -ing. That should work for now. I'm having trouble with the algorithm that decides whether to add a 'new subject' bit to the story summary, instead of just incrementing the number of replies that person made.

ADMIN

thx for the heads up, I had not noticed the issue before.

admin;

Maybe you simply need to make the "comment Posted"

page significantly different when it is successful?

Personally I never lose a comment because I check religiously to see if it says it was posted.

I think it is more "user error" than "software error". Of course most so called computer errors can be tracked back to the computer doing what the user told it to and not what the user wanted it to do.

That's a good idea, Tom. I'll hit that first.

I'm probably going to turn on voting here in a bit; THAT'LL get some rants going I'm sure! But I still think we need it!

Hmmmm.. If I up the maximum size for the subject field, the problem will still occur if someone fills up that maximum with the initial posting. It's definiately a bug, but I don't know if I can fix it. Working on the problem.

Why not truncate the field at max char, at least the post will make it.

Could you do something easy but obvious to see, like maybe the background in a failed post be red. A big red page would get attention pretty fast when expecting the normal white one :)

By the way, off the topic, but where did all the other areas go, like Bio fuels ect.. that were here around the beginning of the year. I am looking for a few of those older topics and new stuff still in those kinds of areas too. I am about to get my wood gaser/charcoal maker going this weekend and hopefully gennies up too.

Wanting those posts on Hydrogen I was reading earlier this year too probably next.

NO clickable link in remote living
« Reply #10 on: October 15, 2004, 08:59:45 AM »
I'm not sure if Admin. has noticed it or not, but there is no link to reply or post a comment in remote living area. Each reply usually has to be a new story. Perhaps something was inadvertantly turned off? Has been happening for a while... just click on an unanswered story and perhaps you'll notice/ understand. Love the board and appreciate your attempts to tweek it for the majorities happiness. Your village idiot... Gary D.
