building 5m variable pitch machine from scratch
« on: September 01, 2004, 11:00:12 PM »
hello dear people, my first posting here !

I'm building a 5 m prop permanent magnet machine with variable pitch from scratch.

So far so good, the alternator is working (it's about 30 cm across, has steel laminations and produces about 2900 watts into a 48 V battery at 350 RPM.

The governor mechanism seems to work, but I still need to set the limit (it needs to be a bit lower than the 350 because that produces too much current for the #19 wire that the generator is using), it does look a bit 'clunky' though.

Cut-in seems to be around 70 RPM.

Next on my 'todo' list are the blades, and after reading a lot I've picked a foam core fibreglass sandwich with a wood-and-steel root. Does anybody out there have any experience with this kind of blade design ?

I put up a picture of the alternator in case anybody is interested in what it looks like. (watch out, it's about 600K)...

regards,

 Jacques
