Any one using Mike's Windmill Turbine
« on: January 26, 2005, 12:56:38 AM »
LOoking to purchase 2 or 3 wind generators.  From some of my questions posted here the responses have moved me away from the Air X which I thougt would do well.  Seems there are better units out there with more capacity etc.  I would prefer to have 3 smaller units than 0ne large one.  E Bay seems to have a few "no Name" units which get good ratings.  I think I saw a post on this site by someone that makes & sells them.

Anyone care to express an opinion on a purchased item.  Mike wants $1000 for 3 including chg controller.

Thanks

I have a bergy XL-1. Very pleased with it. And their after sales service is fantastic. I have had it up for two years now. Also their specs are conservative. I have seen mine top out at 75 Amps/24 volts.

Just curious but in two years how much service have you needed? What kind of things? Any problems? Problematic designs?

Mine was one of the first. It is designed for 1.2 Kwh. In a severe Wind condition Ie 80 mph wind. When it went into dump load and the dump load couldn't take it , It went into slow mode and couldn't stop.  When it was putting out 85 to 90 amps it slowly cooked the stator. They sent me a stator by air and a mod kit. Now if it puts out over 70 amps for a predetermined time it is turned loose. It was my choice to install the stator. They would have repaired it, but I could not have justified the freight. I have seen it put out well over 2Kwh. This was my intro to alt power, Now I'm addicted.

Who's Mike and what's the deal?? I mean what are you getting for the mills and ratings on them, and what kind of charge controller?

mikeswindmill. com.  800 watt turbine.  Includes the charge controller rated 800 watts @ 30mph.  Comes out of Arizona.

Search on Ebay under "wind generators"

Will let you know what I end up with.

That was http://mikeswindmillshop.com

Could not find it at first, went through Ebay and finaly found it, now see I been there before anyway after I saw the site :)

Don't know anything about them myself or those wind gennies they sell. Remanufactored GM altenater wound for wind genie using large magnet (Neo I think) is about all I could find for details.

If you buy them let us know how they work out. Has anyone else bought them yet, or is mike maybe a member here :)

I saw postings here before about modding altenators to be used for wind gennies. Might be how I first found that site, or maybe I found it with google instead?

Anyway I geuss if they work as good as claimed and you want something already built ready to raise, then the price might not be bad. The claim is over 800watts in high winds though, I didn't actually see what they are supposed to produce in the low winds where they start producing at.

"The 12/24 will start out at 12 volts in low winds and will increase as the winds pick up. "

Hmm, what the watts there, before they pickup to the "In high winds either system will  produce well over 800 Watts", and how high of winds is that??

"Permanent magnet alternator for efficient power with 600 + Watt  output

6 blades gives a lot more torque so there is no computer needed "

Again no winds speeds mentioned to get that 600watts, and I think it is normally recomended to stay with less blades for faster speeds than to use more blades for higher torque. Most everyone seems to be building 2, 3 or 4 bladed mills here. Hardly ever see any of the major guys using more that 4 blades max.

I'd ask a few questions about them. If they are good, then $1,000 for 3 mills to produce 1,800 watts might not be too bad a deal. In a way I'd rather have more smaller mills than one big one myself anyway. That's what I am working on, small ones. If one goes down the rest are still working. Rectifiers have less work to do with smaller amps/watts per mill, but takes more of them, but each should last longer too I would think.

Being a newbie on the wind gen area, I contacted Mike's to get more info.  Here is more of what I found out.

They don't have wind speed testing.  but they have RPM testingwhich should give an idea of how it starts to produce & progresses.  The RPM testing is done under full load.

I ordered the 12 volt 800 watt turbines.

Specs are as follows

RPM        Volts       AMPS       Watts

  1.        21.34       11.63      248.18
  2.        28.86       14.58      420.77
  3.        34.4        16.42      564.84
  4.        48 volt     19.5       936.00

Also they stated they should start to produce at 8 to 10 mph.  Since we have a constant wind of 16 to 20 knots day & nite I hope we will produce 24 hrs constant.  What I don't understand is if I have a 12 volt system, & The turbine turns at 950 RPM I am producing 48 volts, which seems like a lot.

I will install them tis season & if interested will post the data to the forum.

Regards

Ed
