More Power, Mwahahahah

More testing and modifications. Now that I have the double zubwoofer geared 2 to 1 there isn't any power under 8 mph. The good news is that anything over 10mph has been charging all the 12v items I can find. Even charged a dead makita battery. Have seen over 40v out of it a couple times with no load.

I have also built another mill with my daughter. Someone gave me a broken HP printer and I looked it up on fixyourownprinter.com and decided it was a lost cause. Lots of parts, shafts, motors, gears led's. We had a good time tearing our broken electronic equiptment apart and turning what we could into another mill. No photos yet but it is definatly worth a good laugh. We used the sputnic on that one for now.

I would love to see what you got out of the printer.  I have a couple motors from different printers that I was thinking of using.  I guess I should finish my current project first though!!

We arent planning on getting any power out of the printer mill, just enough power to light 6 led's. We used some of the gears to drive the motor about 3 to 1. I don't expect it to hold up too long but it is a fun little throw it together project.

I still think all things considered the sputnic is the most impressive. So much power from an unconventional design. Thanks for sharing your experiments.

What was the load?

The Sputnic still impresses me the most.  The local junk store has some 22" ish stainless steel lids off something for a buck each.  

Hmmm... Is it worth the sticthes? Sheet metal and me don't get along. Ever. I have scars to prove it.

I agree. Sputnic would be great at about 4' in diameter. Believe me I have been looking for large round sturdy plastic objects. Here is the joke I have put sputnic on for now.

It is mounted on part of an old aluminum door frame with a paneling tail.

The printer motor has a small nylon gear from the scanner paper feed. The shaft was from the printer paper feed and the large gear was from somewhere in the printer.  The 2 bushings were double gears. They are countersunk into the wood blocks and held in with some speaker clips out of an old boombox.

Darn, I have to redo that photo. Anyway, sputnic has a 7/8" hole so I used the rubber rollers that were on the shaft and mounted it with a 2 screw romex connector. It has 6 leds on it in various locations. Now to get it out in the wind, or as it goes, outside waiting for wind for the next few days.

I'll get a better photo of the gear drive today.
