TDM Makeover
« on: April 05, 2005, 12:16:43 AM »
Still experimenting with my first mill.

Decided to try some different blades made from quarter inch plastic so I pulled the thing apart and cut some new blades and tail. Put a primer coat of paint on the metal. Decided to knock off for the day and then heard the weather report. Winds 10 to 20 tomorrow and 20 to 40 the next day.

Went back to the garage and finished it up.

Before

After

Some things to still work on are a furling system and a gear up on the motor. Probably will go to 6 blades.

Oh yea...so far I've got about $6 in this.  Dumpster divin pays off!

(Zubbly, you're not the only one.)

This is so much fun!

It's a 48V PM DC Motor. I have it mounted on a 6 foot pole with a base on it right now for testing. Loaded it in the truck and took it down to the river to get clean winds the other day when it was really blowing. Hooked up to a small battery it turned out about 2.5 Amps at 14.4V and saw it go over 9 Amps a couple of times at around 16 Volts. Without a load I saw it go to 37 Volts. It was pretty windy. Had it strapped to the tail gate and bumper with a 2" ratchet strap. That's when I figured out it needs a furling tail.

What diameter are both sets of blades?

How well did the white blades work?

Looks a lot fancier with a coat of paint.

Yes I do, Charleston. Where are you located? With a handle like outback I thought you were an Ausie.

The first blades were 32 inches and the new set is 38 inches. The white blades had more torque tho and that's not paint on the blades it's red plastic, quarter inch thick. Got some green just like it. But since my tractor is a ford red belly and the mill will end up on the farm I thought I keep the same color scheme :-)   Can't have no J.D. green !

Why are JDs green?

So you can hide them in the bushes when an International comes by!
