Piggot 4 foot turbine
« on: August 27, 2006, 12:52:11 AM »
The attached photographs may be of interest to some people. The design follows that illustrated in the 2005 Booklet.

The 40 volt Ametek motor is a temporary arrangement until I can find the right size magnets to continue with the design.

I thought the redundant traffic sign might add some life to the design.

Comments welcome.

If the wind obeys the 15kM/h limit you may not need to furl.

Hi David,

It looks nice.

I have been experimenting with a new way to build the alternator, because I don't really like the hollow shaft approach.  Its a hassle getting a pipe the right size to fit the bearings and I worry about the need for seals both ends of the bearing assembly.  (Too much friction.)

Hre is a 3D CAD view of the new arrangement.  The tail hinge pipe is simply welded onto the end of a piece of steel angle that is also the top of the yaw bearing and supports the alternator too.

I had the magnets facing forward originally so as to avoid any interaction with the frame of the machine, but I am not so sure this is worth the hassle now, and I have devised a way to mount the stator without too much steel near the magnets.

You might want to use this approach to building the alternator when you do get the magnets.  It is not in my plans yet but I have some more detailed drawings if you would like to see them.

The stator is still a bit tricky to cast although it does not have the shaft cast into it.  There are 3 mounting studs embedded in the stator during the casting process.

The hub goes onto the shaft and carries magnet rotor and blades.  Magnets face backwards toward the stator and the blades are on the front with this design.

Have fun anyway

This is excellent timing Hugh.  I am working on your 4 foot machine and found the right pipes too difficult to find.  I was planning to adopt the 8 foot machine design to the 4 foot machine dimensions but this looks much better.  I ended up getting a stub axle type trailer hub.

Is the extra disk piece on the stator just to make the stator stronger at the join or does it have another purpose?  It looks like the coil spacing, etc. is unchanged  True?

Thanks

This is very good turbine, David.

Hi

Sorry it took a while to get back to this thread.

Here is a top view / plan view of the piece of steel angle that makes up the frame.

The deeper ring near the middle of the stator is for strength and stiffness.  I think the coil and magnet set up is the same as in the original plans.
