ebay blades?
« on: January 11, 2007, 01:21:51 AM »
Hi guys. Just a quick and easy question to run by you.

Has anyone had any experiences with the fiberglas blades commonly found on ebay lately? Just looking for some opinions on quality or performance.

Thanks in advance,

Cdog.

If they are the ones I think you are asking about, They are the same blades as used on the chinese 12v/24v 200w wind turbines.  they seem to work ok but are quite noisy due to there square ends, little bit of work on the ends makes them almost silent (well it did on my set) plus they are not evenly balanced, requires a bit of fiddling about to get right, but to date no real problems so far with my set. Time will tell.

Thanks for your reply. The blades I am reffering to are sold by magnetmaster and very similar, if not exactly the same ones are sold by magnets4less. These appear to be very strong as there is a man standing on one of them with a chair on each end! The ones in question make a 10'6" rotor and claim to produce 1000 watts at 10m/s.

I beleive I read a post recently by one of the dans that they had purchased a set and were going to report on them in the future, just a little impatient i guess!

Thanks again for the help,

Cdog.

I just rx'd a set of 81 inchers and they will need some filling and fairing especially on the leading edges. The ID of the hub bore is 15/16" so a bushing  is needed to fit the 5/8" gen shaft.

My

$0.02

"magnets4less"

Ordered and recieved a set of their arc'ed Neo's

(curved like the #29's)

From what I thought I was ordering and what I got-

# 29's= 1.75" L, 1.25" W, .25" H. {NTL's)

magnets4less= .75" L, .75" W, 3/16th" H.

Size was listed by the size ring they would make not the magnets size I was told.

Was shipped 4 of the same pole NOT two of each as requested.

When I recieved the replacement two after a long haggle with jip,(jim) @ magnets4less

They had sent in same box as was used bolth ways before and I had added 4 times the bubble wrap as they had used in first shipment.

A chipped magnet!!!!!!!!!!

I E-'ed jip and never heard back.

Was done on purpose I my mind.

Again

just my

$0.02

I was thinking about their blades but now would

never and will tell this experience to anybody asking about them.

I hate to hear about that kind of "customer service". I also wonder if the two companies I mentioned are one in the same, they both say they are located in Plano,Texas?

I am very glad you responded with this info. I was of course considering the cedar blades from our guys here on this site, but they have mentioned in the past about linseed oil and humidity and I live on an island. So I was thinking the glass blades may hold up better over time.

This really puts me in a hard place as this is the final step in my project, and now I am really confused. I wonder if anyone has a phone number to contact these people first hand?

Thanks again,

Cdog.

Well, I have also had an "interesting" experience with magnet4less.  Like many people, I was attracted by their lower prices - at first.  Here's the situation: I live in Australia, and was purchasing magnets to be used in physics experiments at Murdoch University.  I registered with the website and then tried to order about $55 U.S. worth of magnets to get things started.  That's not a lot, I admit, but that's not the point.  The order form would not accept that I did not have a U.S. shipping address, so I emailed the company.  After 2 days (not too bad) I received an email response that the web site was operating properly, and so I proceded to place an order.  As I went to "check out" and pay for those $55 worth of magnets, I was given 2 shipping options - I could pay $198.00 for standard shipping or $210.00 for whatever was next best.  And those were the ONLY options.  According to their shipping info, my order weighed 16 lbs. or less.  So, I checked with the U.S. Post Office website and learned that any package, up to 20 lbs, from the States to my address in Australia only cost $37. U.S. ($35. if the postage was purchased online - which I am sure they do).  So, I emailed Magnet4less again to ask if they could reduce the shipping.  Never heard from them.  Now, I know that I was not ordering a lot of magnets, but I did inform them that I was ordering on behalf of Murdoch University's Physical Science Department, and that I would increase the size of my order if they would reduce the shipping to a reasonable amount.  (but that is not even the point - everyone should get good and fair service, not just people who process large orders). Anyway, that might have given them a clue, but I guess not.  Do you think we might want to order more later?   Hmmm... We'll get our magnets somewhere else.
