2 meter Blade Diameter
« on: April 01, 2007, 08:38:50 PM »
I decided to steer clear of the ebay alternators, I have a 2m 3 blade and hub rotor that I need to match an alternator to. The axial flux ones look doable if I can order some of the parts premade (like the magnet rotors). I have very limited access to machining capabilities so I need to get what I can as premade parts. I was thinking of a tilt back furling system with a hydraulic damper due to simplicity. I have a 40 foot tower that is 4.5inch dia on the bottom and 4 inch top with an adapter for a 1.2 inch mast so that is covered. The 12 inch looks nice and according to the blade calculator the 2m set I have (free from a friend) should be able to work but I am open to input. Looking for 12 volt charging/water heating in dump mode.

WATER HEATING !!

I do not recommend 12 volts, for easier work and much better efficiency try a high voltage generator.

This way the losses will be lower as well.

How may watts are you aiming for ?.

Battery charging is going to be the primary use. Water heating is just the dump load. 500-600 watts would be nice and should be able to be done with that blade set. I can't turn down free stuff! I can cut some tubular pieces as needed and take them to be welded. And I do have a drill press for for some of the hole drilling.

Hi Maryalana

You could use brake rotors from a junkyard and epoxy the mags to them.

If Dan doesn't, try Ed at Windstuffnow. He was doing a kit that would suit 2M very well.

Thanks everyone, I ordered some 8 inch rotors from Ed :-) and I have a rough plan for the tilt back furling. Part of it came from a post on here and part from the junk I have in the shed!

If you don't own a lathe, you can use eight corner even four corner magnet rotors. It doesn't matter if they are round or not. That only matters if your magnets are in laid down on a circle.

But I'm happy you already managed to find suitable rotors from Ed.
