Fixed Vertical Wind Tower?
« on: January 27, 2009, 07:54:13 PM »
Has anyone heard of a Wind Turbine based on a fixed vertical tower or housing that takes wind from any azimuth, and turns it UP, out the top where it drives an impeller mounted horizontally?

I remember reading something like this years ago, but now, I can't find anything on the topic.

Thanks

This sounds vaguely like the "solar tower" idea I've seen kicking around. It is basically a HAWT designed wind turbine mounted vertically. Then there is a huge like chimney thing which shrouds the turbine. I don't think this is exactly what you're looking for but it is a neat thing to check out.

If someone has something interested on shrouded turbines, I'd be interested to read it.

Yes, but they tend to be pretty big.  This is one I found...

I have also heard of the solar tower that uses a large funnel to heat air under it to make it rise up a tube to run turbines.  This is likely a huge project and really I do not think it would be good to force huge amounts of hot air up into the atmosphere.
