Continuous Dump
« on: April 10, 2010, 03:41:45 PM »
Hi everyone
I stumbled on 3 1k dc generators today for cheap....I was thinking (normally leads to problems) , I live in a cold climate, can i just stick some blades on a couple and run them straight to baseboard type heaters or would this type of load just snub everything to a screaming halt. My idea (sometimes dangerous) is to let the cold wind warm my butt without battery station or inverters. Is this possible or a completely bad idea.??
Thx

Possible , yes, BUT are your baseboard heaters made for DC ? probably not.
I remember Mr. Zubbly was heating air with one of his mills. AC directly into a matched array of heaters., with a boatload of capacitors to make the mill starting up easier.
by matched i mean the resistance of the heaters was not so low as to drag down the performance  of the mill.
and the resistance was not so high that the mill did not notice that there was a load on it.

Not that you cant use the generators to charge batteries, you can.
what was the voltage stamped on the generators?
At what rpm was the rated voltage?

Hi
Thx Willib
The generators are 125vdc @ 1725 rpm and rated 1KW . i was also thinkin of a soft start circuit for the load, but it would still need balancing with caps likely to maintain any speed.
Thx again
