Crimp type cable connectors
« on: November 18, 2010, 10:30:15 PM »
Just a question for the more knowledgeable.  I use crimp type cable connectors for the cable on my engine lift,
and no problems.  But, having said that, I have witness marks that are at eye level most times I use it.  Would
like to use them for the tower guys, but I haven't seen any reference to them.  And they will be kind of up there
where I couldn't easily see them.
So, finally the question.  Has anybody used them on guys, and if so, were they good/bad?
    Thanks in advance

I trust my life to cable swages all the time, All the cables on my airplanes are terminated with Nicopress swages. Never use the aluminum ones from the hardware store. If you are using stainless cable use the copper ones, if using galvanized cable, use the zinc plated copper ones. The swaging tools can be quite expensive. If done properly the cable will break long before the swage fails.

Thanks Dustin, what I was looking for.  SS cables, but I have the aluminum swages, so I will get better.   Have the crimping tool,
(long story).  Never thought about looking for info  about aircraft, but males sense now.

More popular than airplanes would be marine, look at sailboat supplies. Try west marine etc.

I've used crimps on all of the guyed towers I've installed, they work very well.

I don't mess around with trying to crimp them myself.  Any cable/rope supplier should be able to do it for you for a small fee.

There's something to be said for not swaging everything right away.  When building a tower and setting up the guys, it sounds like a good idea to swage the terminations at the top, and I plan to do that if I ever build another tower or replace the cables on the current one.  At the bottom, though, you're never sure of the exact length until the tower is raised and lowered once again (assuming it's a tilt-up of course).  Once you've been through that process you know the exact length that the cables should be and you can make them permanent.  If you were to calculate or guess, and have all end terminations swaged, you could have the unfortunate situation of running out of turnbuckle adjustment, needing additional parts, or having to cut and re-make the swage.
So adjustable saddle clamps have their place.  I'm comfortable using them on all my guy wires, even the towing lines.  Three per end.  Never skip the thimble, and make the loop around the thimble tight.  I check the nut tightness every time the tower is down.  I once found one loose nut, but only once!  May not have been tightened properly in the first place, and no faults since.
No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.

I just crimp/swag the tower end cables, not the ground end. Do some simple math to calculate cable length, have the cable cut and swaged with a thimble on one end from the cable supplier. Ground end cable gets 3 clamps and a thimble. US made cable clamps not the crappy China made ones.

To me a properly crimped tower end cable is safer than a clamped cable. How you going to check the cable clamps on a tilt-down tower?

First of all, thanks to all.
Dustin thanks for the tip on swage types.
Sounds like nobody dislikes them, and the point about only doing the tops until everything settles in makes good sense.
Thimbles I always use, but good point.
   Again, thanks to all
