Inverters
« on: May 09, 2011, 03:51:51 PM »
Hi all,...I just picked up two 300watt inverters.....5 bucks at a yard sale....good deal I think.
The label says 600watt start, 300watt continuos......I hooked them (one at a time) and they run various things (tv,satilite surround sound, lights)
Nethier would run my hammer drill ,too much draw right?
My question is can I hook them in series to give more power to run bigger stuff, I'm afraid if I try it though it might burn them up...
Just wondering if inverters can be hooked parralel and or series.........thanks artv

Hi

Without more information I would doubt that trying to run your inverters in any way other than individually would be inviting disaster, there are very few inverters that are designed to connect to another one.  Also if you could parallel them up they would still not run your drill, look at how many watts your drill requires, and that is when it is up to speed and not loaded.  I had a cheap 300W it ran a couple of 60W bulbs but when I connected it to a 300W halogen lamp it died after less than ten seconds, with lots of smoke.

You don't say what batteries you are going to use but 600W will see off the average car battery..

Errr.... I think you've got a double-negative in there you didn't mean! Running two free-running, non-synchronised inverters in parallel will almost guarantee the release of "magic smoke".

Thats wrong. Most power tools (drills, saws, grinders, even vacuum cleaners) are rated at their full-load current. A drill that is rated at "700 watts" certainly does not take 700 watts to spin an unloaded armature.

Hi

Ooops.

I meant starting current and to get it up to speed.

The answer to the original question is no, unless they are stackable inverters which is very unlikely, the wave form will not be in sync and I'm pretty sure you'll let the smoke out of a lot of stuff, including the inverters.
I aint skeerd of nuthin.......Holy Crap! What was that!!!!!
