Motor Conversion Updates
« on: July 29, 2006, 02:09:21 AM »
Many members including myself like tinkering with these.Havent seen many outputs attached to wind speed and blade diameter pretty much since ive been here.

Please enlighten me.Im sorry if i missed someone.

 Its braggin time!

 Lets go 1hp plus.

I know Zubbly can and did.Special thanks

Vawtman,

Not exactly what your looking for but I'll get things started. I have 2 conversions, neither flying yet. For bench testing I drive them with a 1/2 HP motor which pops the circuit breaker long before the generator gets to capacity.

The first is a 1.5 HP 4 pole. Cut in is 150 RPM at 24 volt and I can get 260 watts at 450 RPM. The second is an 8 pole 1.9 HP that I just finished. Cut in is 70 RPM at 24 volts and she'll put out 100 watts at 240 RPM.

The 4 pole I'm hoping to use with a 8-10' blade set for "normal" wind speeds. The 8 pole I plan to experiment with some lower wind speeds.

Sorry, no amps vs wind speed data yet.

Henry thats what im looking for.Success stories.

I thought you had one with blades on.

Are you still using the 110a,s?If so, what did you adhere them with.Ive found JBWeld isnt very good.I had 4per pole on the 5hp and noticed the mags separated a little and came off like they werent glued at all.I plan on using them for the 3hp experiment im working on and rewind the 5hp later.

 Thanks for the reply

Nice to read about!!!  (conversions):)

 But,

"outputs"

What would be,(Good standard type way) or what are you doing,

for these "outputs", numbers?

No I don't mean what you used to drive it, (Nice to know this also like the

drillpress or lathe).

More like a standard, load.(battery bank, lights ect..)

That you used to get your numbers, Volts, Amps or Watts.

:)

Vawtman,

It ain't a success 'till it's putting amps into my batteries. But just to humor you I pulled one of my ECM conversions and put up the 1.9 hp conversion with 6' low TSR blades I picked up on E-Bay. Bearings are new and a little stiff but we'll see how she does.

First conversion was with the 110's skewed across the rotor. A bit of cogging but I can just barely turn it with 2 fingers. Second had 2 magnets for each pole and I tried offsetting them 1/2 the distance between teeth. Worked great! No cogging at all.

With both I used JB weld. Machinist gave me the rotor beautifully done. Mirror smooth. I worked it down with the grinding wheel to get in nice and rough. Magnets I touched up with course sandpaper right before the glue. I've had them both up to 500 RPM with no problem. We'll see whan the fall storms come.

My testing is into my 24 volt battery bank. At any RPM I record the amps flowing and current battery voltage to get the watts. Not as controlled as some of the setups I've read about but it is "real world".

Darn acid rain Henry

Make sure to coat them well and be carefull not to open the coating when installing.I found 2 that tinted my coating brown not good but thank god i pulled it when i did.Left the cover off one freak storm.

The thing i noticed when disassembling is one mag on each pole probably the first round where tight but after that i think they hated each other to much and weakened the bond. I also scarfed them and rotor.

Hmmm

This is weird with all the pics of split motors and how to ?s and none are flying?

What happens after the pics are taken and Zubbly and Fluxs great and tireless advice?

They do work you just have to follow through.

My last conversion was flying until I bust it. It wasnt useful, more of a garden feature. So thats my update on my last conversion. Complete failure, it only lit a car bulb dimly when spun by a drill.

I suppose I'm overdue for an update on my progress, too.

I have two projects concurrently on the go.  One 3HP motor conversion, one axial flux genny built from scratch.

Parts for each are either in hand or on the way.  What I really need is TIME....

I'm also not ashamed to admit that I'm a hopeless geek, and I regularly think of tests I can do to learn something or other and spend more time on tangents than on the actual construction of the actual machines.  Ya gotta spin to win, ya know.

Special thanks to Zubbly and Kenny for the help and encouragement so far!

No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.

Here's my little 1/2 hp conversion with an 8 foot set of blades , close to the ground producing about 50 to 70 watts , not sure of wind speed maybe 15 mph, can't wait to get it higher.

Here is my redneck windmill...

Devo i think redneck windmills have more potential because we(redneck me}Dont care about specs just fly the darn thing and fix it later.FUN

Re my Baldour conversion

It ran for a while at ground level with a 6 foot rotor. Some cogging, & slow to start up. Once it started up, it would peak around 5A & stall. After a couple months of running, I tore it back down. The fiberglass was a bad idea. Cracks everywhere. I am going to salvage the magnets, turn a solid armature, try to get the mag spacing right to eliminate the cogging, pour it in epoxy, drop down to a 4-5 ft 3 blade, & possibly rewind. I'll post details when I get around to redoing it.

Also have a garbogen stator sitting & waiting for some tlc. I've been mulling over the possibilities of using a lot of small high grade magnets with a very tight airgap on it. I don't think the curved neos which fit it can be had anymore. Time will tell.

Too many projects at once. Hopefully soon I'll have some viable results.
