Rooftop Turbine
« on: February 04, 2007, 03:33:46 PM »
This turbine is made by Pacwind.

When and if i can get the camera to work i will upload a pic of the airfoil i cut with the foam cutter.

Interesting site.  The Delta looks somewhat similar to Ed's Lenz Turbine.

They do have a interesting way of laying out the stator in their gallery section.

PCB board with slots cut out for normal coil windings to fit into. This could be usefull if a coil burned up for some reason - just replace the bad coil.

Hi Todd

It seems like that could be.Maybe just enough to help it self start since the foils are straight.

I wouldnt think that tower has pictured could handle the wind load.Maybe just a prototype at this stage.

They mention twice on the front page that they hold the patent for VAWT's.  To me, that's another company pushing the idea that VAWT's are "new" or "futuristic" and trying to sell them via the oooh ahh factor.  That makes me less likely to trust them, but maybe that's just me.

Otherwise, VAWTman's gonna see a suit for using their name, and poor windstuff Ed is infringing on patent rights, too!  :-p

lol...

VAWTs have been around for a few millenia

pehaps the USPTO doesn't keep records back that far ;)

I laid out the design for the wings on the delta, also posted the design renderings on my site for several years.   I didn't patent the design though.   The wings work reasonably well in my tests but create quite a bit of drag because of the open "C" on the up wind side.  They don't perform as well as the Lenz2 design.

Actually if I was so afraid that someone was going to steal my work I would never have posted it to begin with.   It's nice to know my work is worth stealing.   For the most part when I post idea's or designs, it's intended to inspire others into new or different thinking... it appears I've done that.

The Lenz2 design is also being coppied by a Chinese manufacture.   The machine is shoddy at best and he doesn't have enough detail about it to make it perform.   He can also be found lurking on this site from time to time.  ( Yes Roc, I know your here and what your doing ).

I have several other designs, VAWT's, that are still in several stages from design to testing that may or may not be posted depending on their results.   As well, many other designs not relating to wind, intended for the AE-RE industry some of which may be soon revealed...

Even if they are stolen, I know where they came from and hopefully the world be better off because of it...

....or like a giant car heater blower...which I

think someone mounted on a motorcycle way back on the old discussion board...they had air scooping into the middle and flowing to the outside...seems like it worked really well at speeds of 30 mph or more.

Valterra,Its pretty much a waste of money to patent a vawt design. The turbine i pictured is using multiple blades. Can be done better but stick with the multibladed concept only fewer blades.

Its so easy to make slight changes even the Chiness can do it.Patent or not.

Hi Valterra,

I gotta call you on this.  I checked their home page, and your post is nothing short of a BS lie.  Nowhere do they say they own the patent on VAWT's, let alone twice.

They say VAWT's are patented, and they say they use a patented generator design.  They don't even say they own the patents they are using on the front page.

Pacwind's 'About Us' page clarifies it:

"Phil has recently won U.S. Patents on the "Omnidirectional Multi-Bladed, Single Axis Wind Generator", his unique Permanent Magnent Generator (PMG) and the overall VAWT design."

It's downright ignorant to suggest that VAWTman's screenname or Windstuff Ed's turbines are an infringement of patent rights, simply because they like VAWT's.

The saddest part is that there are readers here who took your fib seriously.

Spreading misinformation and lies does no good.  I would hope that you start reading what is actually written, rather than reading what you want something to say, and I would hope that you educate yourself about patent and intellectual property rights.

With that said, their turbine appears to be nothing more than a Banki/Mitchell turbine, which has been turned on its side.  Air is simply a less dense fluid than water, but power can be extracted using the same principles.

no guff vawtman i was looking at thier page last week.

with out a top pin there will be a lot of twist on the bearing.

it would be better if they dropped it down,

so the bearing/ pulley / generator was about half way between the top and bottom.

the wind would load it nicely .

I just like the principle of a multibladed turbine, sav like the pic or more airfoilish for more overall lift.

Not sure how its mounted but would be smooth spinner if the tower could handle it.

Would be nice to have pulley/gen in the basement to play with.DARN COLD here

 Thanks for the comment edaddy
