Things to do on snowy days
« on: February 26, 2010, 07:31:36 AM »

I got external connectors....those little bolts...and I connect them in series to

charge them(24volts) ...when the meter reads 15.5 ....takes about 10 minutes

to bring it up to about 21v .....10 more minutes to bring it up to 22.5 but goes back

down to 21.5 after a half hour rest....they run about 6 hrs a night and keep bright enough

for about 3 nights.

Just sent off 2 battery packs and adapter to TomW yesterday looks like this.....

took since Nov. to settle on a designs

Notice How the alligator clips are soldered onto the battery terminals? The buttons make spring loaded contact with

terminals underneath the adapter box wich goes to the plug in receptacle of the Milwaukee drill.

The battery cartridges can be stand alone units....so you can just clip the bare ends of wire to a 14.4 volt charger

Could be used for a 14.4 - 16 volt LED lamp?

Might want to point out they are LED lanterns.

Big Fun!

What brand of lantern?

It looks like you're charging in series... so they're 6v each?

Where's picture of the pedgen?

The red thing is another one of Norm's master-pieces , it is an adapted set of Sub-C NiCds for a highly paid editor for this forum.

The pedgen will show up here once Norm has finished shoveling the 12 inches of snow in his drive way.

ZAP;

If they're the same as the dollar general ones that I got from a VERY nice and gifted person, they will be the 6V IF he's using the 4 AA NiCds, which from the back ground looks like he is :).

I'm in awe of him being able to get bolts into the case.

I couldn't get it to insert so I'm trying it this

way...you can't see the Ametek motor on the other

side but the red roller blade is there at the

bottom of the particle board wheel it spins it at

a 1:17 ratio or 1020rpm at 60rpm crankspeed so the cut in speed is much too low for 12 volt

batterys takes too much torque so 24 volt charging

is just about right...

looking out the window and pedaling is much better

on a winter day is much better than being on a

bicycle out there.

the red battery pack adapter is just another

of the many projects that I can do on snowy days

and another kind of battery that I charge...

Unfortunately I chose wood to make the adapter

and it didn't survive even the shipping to TomW

thinking of making the next one of cast liquid

plastic like Ed Lenz uses on some of his products

........

try the insert one more time.....

nope says error on page....

Bruce;

Yes they are...I got them from Ghurd and he still has some left they have a LED light and

are worth the price ....I've had them for 3-4

years and still as bright and efficient as the

day I got them .....unlike some of the cheaper

ones that cost a little less but quit after

a few months or weeks !

Yeah they use 4 of those AA yellow NiCads

about 700 Ma.  ....they hold up very good also.

ZAP this is what I use for power entrys at

Thanks Bruce, Tom, and thanks Norm for the information.

Those lanterns sound nice.

I have a couple of the original River Rock lanterns from Target and they put out pretty good light but I felt they were a little too expensive at somewhere around $20?

One is still new in the package but the other has held up well considering how many times it's been dropped and also being left on the toaster oven a few times and having the bottom melted then re-melted so the bottom would screw on again.  heh...Doh!

I should be posting soon of a new pedgen system.  This system has no flywheel other than a bike rear wheel, amazing the difference a nice heavy flywheel will make. Thanks for the pictures Norm.

The trick to long lasting LEDs is to Not overdrive them.

(most store bought LED stuff is overdriven to be bright,

and cheap, and use more battery than they should)

The trick to efficiency is start with Good LEDs,

and drive them even less.

The drawback is they are not as bright per LED.

The good thing is they last about forever in daily use,

and the batteries last longer for a given quantity of light,

even if it takes an extra LED.

Nope your history of being a dozenaire is already out and going Viral and giving credit where credit is due :).

I totally agree with getting good LEDs, and then not over driving them.

I go to both Lowes and Home Depot and constantly telling the employees and customers about why NOT to buy this type or the other and why they should NOT be hot and what will happen after they're hot enough on the outside to be too hot on the inside.

Rich's LED lights are 100000 times brighter than most out there and no-where near as hot as any of them.

Cheers

"Rich's LED lights..."

Exactly!  Because he's not using surplus catalog LEDs.

But the little lamps are 5mm LEDs, a world apart.
