parts for tower
« on: June 18, 2008, 07:55:57 PM »
I've searched the internet and I get lots of hits, but most are not what I am looking for.  I want to get anchors to bury in concrete for my tower with nice fat holes on the top for my guy wires.  It would be nice if there was a flat end at the bottom to rest under the ton of concrete.  Where do most of you buy yours?  Any good web sources or phone numbers?

You're looking for this stuff:   http://www.graftonutility.com/products.html

...then click on Pole-Line Hardware, then Anchoring.  You'll get the catalog pages from HUBBELL-Chance

Google search THIS board for anchors and you will find the above contained in a thread as well as many others.

Forgive me if I am repeating a previous question:

I plan on building a tilt-up guyed tower 30-35' high.  I read the article at

http://www.otherpower.com/otherpower_wind_towers.html

on tower construction.  With regards to the concrete base pad, where can I get bolts that are long enough for bolting the steel pivot assembly for the base of the pole?  Is 1 foot long enough?  Can I get these at Home Depot, or do I need much longer ones? I plan on having a 2x2x3' concrete pad for the base.  Is this ok?

I was also going to have a pole buried in the ground about 5 feet in concrete and 8 feet high and set 6 feet away from the base.  I was going to attach a winch and use this to hoist up the pole.  This will serve as my gin pole.  I've calculated the loads on the lines and the bending moments for the pipe I want to use and everything is totally within limits.  How much concrete would I need for this pole?

Finally, how do I upload pictures to my posts?

Might be cheaper and just as good to attach [weld or bolted] your bolts to a hunk of angle iron or other scrap iron with enough thread exposed and the  iron embedded in the concrete.

Threaded rod comes in 4 and 6 foot lengths for sure, also, but may not be as good as true bolts. I used threaded rod 4 feet in the concrete with washer locked to the deep end by 2 nuts. It is not coming loose.

Farm stores sell long carriage bolts but I don't trust them bolting iron together.

Just an idea or 2.

Thanks Tom.  That seems like a simple enough solution.  I can get good angle iron at a scrap yard and weld threaded rod.  Is 3/4" enough or do I need 1"?  Do you use a level and attach the iron to a wooden frame or some other support before pouring the concrete?

Also, how do I upload pictures?

http://www.fieldlines.com/special/faq

read that first off

we are experiencing technical difficulty with the boards photo uploads section so you will want to upload 2 photos you don't really want and you won't be able to delete or post them using the add photos prompt in stories or comments after those first two everything will work fine.

you will find "your photo uploads" in a box on the right hand side of your screen that has your name at the top of the box "you have to be logged in" upload your photos there remember the photo posting rules and resize your photos under 150KB and less than 640 x 480 pixels before uploading them once you have your photos uploaded go ahead and start a new story comment or diary like normal when you want to add a photo to your text look for a box that looks tike this.

that user files box will be over on the upper right for stories and new diaries. There will be a box that looks just like it at the bottom of the screen for comments. select the photo you want to post from the drop down menu then click [insert image] and the utility will add the proper html code to your post to display the picture once you have added all your photos and text click [preview] to make sure everything is the way you want it then click [post] and wait and make sure it posted and you get the confirmation page and you didn't get any errors in red print.
