Tower height
« on: September 16, 2009, 08:29:53 AM »
I'm planning to put a 20 m (65') tower close to my house. The height of my house is 6 m so the tower will be more than twice as high as the house. Is this enough or will there be too much turbulence.

My last tower was only 13 m and that was way too short. The mill could turn a 180 degrees in a few seconds and then back again. My question is if 7 more meters will do any difference?

Normal rule of thumb is 10m above any surrounding object. if the house was the trouble it should be much better. if there is something other than the house causing the problem then it depends on their height and distance.

Thank you Flux,  is there any rule of thumb about the distance to surrounding objects. I'm not looking for the ideal, more interested to know when it becomes meaningless to even put up a windmill.

I find that things upwind closer than about 1/4 mile can affect things badly if they are comparable in height to the mill. Lower or more distant will still have an effect but you should manage with it.

On the down wind side things are much less critical and even things the height of the mill don't cause too much trouble if they are 200yds away.

Sometimes we have to manage with far less than the ideal and small machines may not behave too badly but turbulence has more effect on large ones.

My brother in law does something related to wind forces, though not really related to what we do.

There is a rule of thumb (I saw a sketch in one of his text books).

Ideally, the tower should be at least 5X it's height away from anything it's own height.

A 100' tower should be 500' away from anything 100' tall.

Meaning most windmills are far from ideal.

I wrote a web page a little while ago that tries to give an overview of the various "rules of thumb" related to wind turbine siting. Please take a look at http://www.solacity.com/SiteSelection.htm

Hopefully it is helpful.

Your page was really helpful. Especially the kite test, never heard of that before but it is a brilliant idea. I will try that. Thank you Rob
