buck- i was in your shoes about a year and a half ago.
my place is near mt adam's, wa. about 4000 ft. lots of snow. hot in summer
i wanted a place to shack up until i decided to build a full on cabin. decided on a
stick framed- here in the NW most timber is local even though it isn't FSC certified
steel roof- will outlast comp. and has no petrol products in it
durarock/pine siding- pretty maint free, kinda fire retardent
interior is wood- a mish-mash of used 1X run horizontally- totally green.
has wood stove- only burn wood from the land
sleeps 4, and it's only 10 foot by 10 foot. framed, roofed and most siding up in a three day weekend with two helpers.
the problem with cord/straw/stone ect for a small structure is the walls are so thick that your footprint is large even for a small structure. then there's the time to do it. i'd whoop something up like i did, then get serious when you wanna build your "real" house.
best to you building!
