Post failed
« on: December 08, 2007, 01:36:54 AM »
I wrote a big reply to the 20 pole 3 phase gen posting, but my reply failed???

Nothing personal, but probably user error. We seldom remove comments unless they are combative, spam or way out of line. None were removed today that I can see in the logs so not sure what to say? What error did you get? "Reply failed" is pretty vague and not much info. Resectioned because it has absolutely nothing to do with "Wind".TW

I have had that happen, most commonly when the subject line is too long in the original posting.  If I use the browsers forward and back buttons, I can lose what I have typed.  I know that can be frustrating.  For that reason, I have on occassion taken to typing out longer responses in a text editor, and then pasting them into the comment window.  That way, if it does dissappear into that giant vacuum of the internet somewhere, or wherever that place is that one half of my socks and gloves end up, I have a copy to paste in.  Rich

Hi: Yes, I use a test editor too except I closed the editor before I realized the post failed. I shortened the subject line which seemed to do the trick, though the subject is auto created on reply so not sure how the original subject succeeds and the reply fails unless it is the extra 3 characters "RE:" that kills it...

I don't like the way spell check works, so I always write my stuff up in write mail, spell check it then cut and paste to the post comment page. Anything you loose could be just repast back on again until you cut or copy again.

I have noticed several times too ,when commenting, The post failed do to more than fifty characters in subject line. This always boggled me because it's the posters subject line that was automatically carried over to my comment. Then I delete half of what they wrote in the subject to get it to go through

Punctuation in title bug...
« Reply #5 on: December 08, 2007, 05:50:24 AM »
There is a bug in Scoop. When a poster uses punctuation, particularly ["] a quote. You cannot  reply until you take them out.

If the return page after you "submit" does not specifically say comment posted thank you blah blah ... You should assume it failed to post.

I try to catch these stories with the reply problem but I am only one guy with a bit of a life beyond this computer so some slip through. Kurt probably fixes them too but it would be nice if users didn't use quotes in story titles.

To change the title in your reply just highlight the title with the mouse and type in your new title.

Sorry your post got eaten by the web. Typically I blame Bill Gates because it feels so right.

Cheers.

What gets my goat is a thing at X:01 O'clock.

"page not available", or something like that...

So I click 'back' and often it reloads the page fresh, meaning everything is gone.

And it never happens on something short like this,

it happens after 2 hours of hunt-n-peck typing!

Top of hour bug..
« Reply #9 on: December 09, 2007, 05:22:24 AM »
I have told DanB this problem is getting worse.

Apparently it has low to no priority.

Perhaps a rally or petition will spark some effort to remedy it?

Whats even more interesting is it is starting to be an "every 20 minutes bug" here.

If I had the access to check this stuff out I would pull in some resources to look into it, but I don't. Nothing I can do.

Cheers.

Hi G,

I frequently see this site down for several minutes at a stretch, but hadn't noticed any particular correlation with time of day.

Happens at X:01 ~ X:06 to me.

It's worse with this Vista laptop because it wants to reload more often, or this Phishing filter, verification, anti-everything stuff the wife makes me use since I made 'her' XP machine very ill.

Never had a 20 minute thing.

Will this post at 12:01 my time?  We'll see by the stamp.
