Erie PA Jacobs - sad sight
« on: March 08, 2010, 03:58:58 PM »
There has been what we believe to be a Jacobs machine off I-90 to the left heading East a couple exits past Erie, PA. We look for it turning any time out this way.

Dave M. just informed me he saw it over the weekend and it is not looking very good. He says it's missing a blade and the main assembly appears to be hanging.

We know there are a few of you out this way and any information you may know about this machine would be interesting to hear.

Sorry no photo at this time, that would be great if any one had a photo as well. I sure hope they get it repaired and running again, it's sad and rare to know it's not flying.

Hiker,

Thanks for the photo, it just makes me want to help to get it back up and running. Someone had mentioned this one here was 26' diameter ? I know little about those machines other than they are considered by many to be the best for the size.

I hope someone else chimes in here as well and knows of the machine I am talking about. You can't miss it if you drive the Thruway, we have watched it for years. It would be nice to know some history and what has recently happened to it.

Is that missing blade anywhere near the machine ? It would be interesting to know what happened to that machine and when as well. Thanks for the photo.

Yes, I believe that's the road. From the Thruway traveling NE it would be on your left across the Westbound I-90. I've watched it for years, it's sad to think it's not running. Do you know anything about it or what has happened ? Thank you,  Dave B.

I drive by it everyday to school!   It broke some time earlier this winter.  I think it was damaged by high winds.  The one blade is shot and the main yaw bearing assembly is severely garbled.

I don't think it is 26ft diameter....  For some reason I thought it had a drive shaft that went to the ground, but I may be wrong.

I think the exact location is between Station road (rt432) and route 97 exit, on the north side.

I would love to know why the owner hasn't done anything to it, as it is giving a bad impression for windmills at this point.

Are you sure that is the same windmill?  They must have fixed it partially since the last time I saw it (last week).

Yeah it's been quite awhile since I've been by there or is there another one south of I90 and west of
I79 ?
Anyhow I been thinking be nice if someone could get the address of the owner
and communicate with him somehow.....keep the spirit of windpower alive !

any other members living near to Conneaut, Ohio.....
Love our new windmills down at the harbor and out by I90
latter can be seen coming from Erie and about 1/2 mile before the RT 7
241 exit.

I did some internet digging, I found the address, owner's name, phone number and related data, someone can PM me for the details. I actually live a mere 5 minutes from this guy's house, maybe I should go pay them a visit. Here is an aerial photo for your viewing pleasure of when it was functioning.
