Voltage stabilizer
« on: September 28, 2005, 09:45:16 AM »
I was just thinking. If I would have wind generator with the coils that produce 220 volts ( 180-300, let's say), how could I regulate the voltage to 200-240 volts?

Is there such device?

yes, the best way to do this is a battery bank and inverter. I know thats not what you want to hear but there you are.

If your wanting a non grid connected system then go with what DR. D stated, it is the best way to go... If your outside the US it's much simpler to get a 240 volt inverter, being in the states as I am, the ones for the market here are generally 120 volt units and if you want 240 you need two capable of being series stacked. I have however ordered "foreign" inverters just to make use of the 240 volt with out having to use expensive stacking units... the only consideration there is if your load if frequency sensitive, 50Hz as opposed to 60Hz.

If your angling for grid connected then build your self a turbine with an operating principal similar to the multi megawatt units GE builds. They essentially use an induction motor with the armature connected to a control unit to keep the system synced to grid frequency by raising or lowering the field voltage. This is why grid tied turbines have no inverter... of course if the grid fails they give no output, unless of course you have a load sensing diesel genorator and slightly modify the controll unit on the wind machine.

I know of some folks in Kansas near where I lived for a while that recently developed such a machine and are now selling the plans, although in my personal opinion their tower design while sound (looks like oil well rigging to me LOL) could do with a bit of structural and aesthetic improvement, and I know a better air foil could be made, but the electronic controller design gets the job done and that I can't really criticize!

They will sell it to you assembled and even program the IC chips for whatever induction motor you care to use.

I have not personally ordered one of their controllers but I was toying with the idea for a little project I was considering.

Just a thought here but Siemens sells a line of tiny PLCs called LOGO. They're cheap fairly easy to program and could monitor power flow, wind speed for cut in and what ever else you can throw in.
