The RAY3, Day One
« on: October 26, 2006, 04:53:14 AM »
No time like the present to start a new project I always say! I call it the, Ray3.

This is the rotor with some of the magnets positioned.

This unit will be very similar to the RACA2 but I am looking for 500 watts from this little puppy. There will be 48 magnets in this design and a nine cubic inch rating. I am sticking with the #14 gauge 28 turns. There is a higher magnetic density and the coils will be optimized for exact length. There may need to be midpoint coil support stiffeners added.

A 3/4" hollow, stainless steel main shaft was chosen to reduce the weight. Two double row ball bearing will support the rotor and will be mounted in neoprene holders to reduce noise and vibration.

The stator end plates will be the same 1/8" nylon.

My coil winder will have to be modified to handle the increased length but is is a lot easier once you have a model to work from. I will be winding the coils next. Hope to finish this one in the next couple of days.

Joseph if you were to increase the dia , you could take advantage of the increased angular speed , and keep your coil size the same or smaller than the RACA2

more coils , less resistance per coil is more gooder :-)

just a suggestion

willib, yes I agree that the increased diametrical size would increase the angular speed. At 15" in diameter there would be the same 48 magnets on the perimeter. It would be nice to compare the difference in the output of your suggestion. My new coils will only increase to 7 inches from the 4 inches on the RACA2.

where does he get all those wonderful toys?

The Joker...lol

Seriously, great work!  You mentioned that you might need to make some type of coil support because of the increased length.  What would happen if instead of one long coil, you used two shorter ones?

Sorry gents, angular velocity or rotational rate is independent of diameter and usually measured in radians/sec or RPM (6 deg/sec). You must be thinking of linear velocity which is diameter dependent.

It's angular velocity that's used in the power output equation.

Sorry to be picky.

If you increase diameter, keeping magnets, copper and speed the same, power output will be the same.

A larger diameter physically ALLOWS you to use more magnet and copper resulting in greater output.

SamoaPower, yes linear velocity thanks for the heads up.

Hi Joseph, Great looking suff, I cant beleive you get so much done. Are you building around the clock??? Thanks sharing. Fun to see the different ways of doing things. Harrie

Joseph, staying busy I see !   Is this another single phase, just 3x longer?  Should do 3x the small one or better.

I plan to build another one but have to move on to the next project on my list, the stirling engine.  I'll be watching closely how you progress on this one though!

Keep up the great work!

How many generators per week do you produce?...

I'm more in the 6 months/generator group.

Peter, This one has me really excited so I am trying to see just how long it will take me. I have a pattern to work from this time. I am into it for 12 hours now. Almost done this one.
