Flywheel Power
« on: December 08, 2007, 04:53:26 PM »
First the pics.....

With snow on the swing....I'm not going out there!

So I rigged up this little beauty with the usual

cardboard, masking tape, (duct tape where real

strength is required)hot glue....etc.

Hooked up a little stepper motor (thanks Ghurd!)

That little silver gizmo with the wires taped to

the ...er...flexible coupling, direct drive to

the balanced particle board flywheel thru the

mower blade arbor ( an very excellent bearing

assembly BTW) a spare wheel(donut) will replace

this the particle board in the near future.

Okay 2nd pic is the output at about 300rpm.

, 20 Ma...at about 120rpm and 7 Ma the 3rd LED

gets dim....and when the meter no longer registers and less than 50 rpm...only the one LED is lit.

Makes for a nice power source for experimenting

with LEDs also...

Its just Fun all the Way !

 Norm,

you gave me an idea. How about a little waterwheel, under the faucet, so when you turn the water on, it powers up an led. Then you can see to wash your hands!

All joking aside, I enjoy reading about, and seeing the pictures of your "little" projects as much as I do a 17' wind-gen. It appears that you have more fun, than most people, and I admire that. Keep up the good work.

I don't use that much water to wash my hands...

now flushing the toilet....Hmmmm !

If I waited till I built even a 3' wind-gen to

write about it would be quite awhile ....my big

windmills end up never getting hooked up to a gen.

They already make them. I bought one last year in cool blue. It actually makes the water stream turn blue. The down fall is it is a two inch long unit and gets in the way. I didn't like it.

It's amazing what you can think up to do with old mower parts.

How is the stepper wired?  4 diodes?

The smaller the do-hicky, the bigger the fun!

The stepper is wired 4 diodes I just plug em in

one at a time with a needle nose pliers nice

tight fit twist the other ends together with a

lead wire and a wure nut....cut the red wire

right before it goes to the socket run it to another

terminal and that's all there is to

hooking it up.

Yep ....the smaller the do-hickey the bigger the

fun...cause you can do it in your kitchen between

meals and with coffee.

(Ok....clear that stuff off the table we're

about ready for dinner now) (the boss speaking !)

   LOL !

(51 years yesterday and almost forgot Whew !)

Just as wonderful as the day I met her !

with more smiles than tears !
