Hydro Air
« on: August 24, 2005, 01:42:11 PM »
I have a decent sized overshot  water wheel driving 2 100 amp   car alternators thru toothed belt ex car timing belts /gears and jackshafts , charging  deep batteries inverters and so power to the house  , now the problem  I like central AIR !!!!and  to drive  it i would need a humongous / expensive  inverter , now the question do you think a car air compressor is big enough to work a whole house air system  drven at say 1500 rpm by the wheel , I have plenty of power for the fans , the wheel only drops 4 rpm (from 50 to 46 ) at 180 amp output from the alternators,  the house is within 30 feet of the wheel   Posible ??

   your thoughts ?

If you have plenty of DC power then use DC motors for the compressor and air handler.

search online for 'manual j' and air conditioning. use that to figure out how big a unit you need (depends on temp, humidity, insulation level of house, etc). so you end up with a number like 3 to 5 tons or so. one ton is 12,000 BTUs.

then you have to find out what the tonnage or btu's of an automotive unit is. you can get some qualitative guess if you figure out how much HP they pull. look at RV units, they usually give BTU measures in the 1 ton range. a large old sedan from the 70's with the harrison a-6 compressor will likely be the biggest 'junkyard' system. after that, look at busses and rv's.
