Single Phase Motor as Generator?
« on: May 25, 2008, 06:03:29 PM »
Hi all..

Is possible to use a single phase motor as generator? Which are the conexions required? I have a centrifugal pump coupled (direct drive)with a single phase 3kW motor. Is possible to use it as a generator?

thanks in advance

I assume you want to use it as a self excited induction generator.

Single phase units don't work too well, it might go but don't get your hopes too high.

Normally even for single phase they use 3 phase units with the load across one phase and a pair of capacitors.

You may be able to add a bit of capacitance to the start winding and put the rest across the run winding.

You could of course add magnets to the rotor and make it a synchronous generator but even then the single phase is against you.

Hi Flux

Thank for your answer....

could you indicate me how to wire the capacitors to the single phase motor? Any web page or bibliography about this issue?

thanks

Just connect capacitors across the run winding. As I said you may be able to add some to the start winding depending on the type of motor.

Very hit and miss with single phase, usually works with high speed motors Anything more than 6 pole may not excite.

First hit I got on Google, not looked at it, may help :-

you are knowledgable.

how much do you know about hydroelectro generators and turbines?

We have 72 feet head and 500L/sec flow taken directly from the dam, it has an existing, very old power station which needs to be replaced.

output should be 60-70 KWh.
