LED christmas lights
« on: November 18, 2005, 02:15:56 PM »
i'm looking into stringing LED lights all over my house for when i want just a little bit of light. as far as brightness, how do they compare to the normal christmas lights? i've read there can be problems with viewing LED's when you're not at the correct angle. is this true? thanks, Reuben

I love them.  The 'bulbs' are frosted so they don't really have any directionality to them.  They use < 4 watts per string of 70 so I am powering mine with a small windmill.  They might be a little dimmer than the incandescent but I think they are still bright.  The one thing I don't like about them is they have a 60 Hz flicker.

If you are looking for the 'antique candlelight' ones, I have 6 new strings of 70 (still in box) that I am looking to get rid of.  (The wife wants a different color.)

They are probably a poor choice for lighting. The LEDs are Very low brightness. The transformer I looked at was low efficiency. For light output a 7W CFL would blow them away.  I saw one that was far worse than the others, with LEDs no brighter than the LED in a VCR, or the front of computer.

But they do look cool!

i have a bunch of the led xmas lights up and i would say they are close to the same brightness as the small incadescent xmas lights i have them strung along the gutter and i can see on the porch pretty good and 2 34ft strings together are using right at .2 amps thru the trimetric so about 5 watts
