Hello Bruce,

I'm not taking any credit for my idea of making LED bulbs. I just figured out a way to empty (without damaging) that reflector so as to accept LED's. If they really used my idea, I'm glad I helped but really feel sorry for them. It's not a way to go commercial. But somehow, I doubt it. Their reflector looks specifically made to dissipate heat.

My idea is usable just with halogen bulbs that have no front glass cover. The covered ones are impossible to convert. Unless you're a boat-in-a-bottle kind of guy.

Thanks anyway Bruce.

The glass covers on the halogen bulbs are actually pretty easy to pry off with a screwdriver; just sometimes it breaks the glass, since they are a glass disk glued onto the shell; the glue isnt very strong.

Hello Claude;

   Oh well was worth a try :--)

Those front glass parts are pretty easy to pop off. I thought I would end up breaking one , but they come off pretty easy.

Cheers!!

fungus;

   You are so correct! I thought I would end up breaking the glass fronts , but haven't broke one yet.

They just pop right off with a thin bladed screw driver.

Cheers

Hi Bruce,

Thank you and fungus too for the advice. I'll surely try that trick. The best way would be if that front glass could be reinserted in place after the LED conversion. This would provide additional protection for the LEDs.

My heart is still searching for a way to make a reliable 220V conversion. My mind says DC via a transformer. Being electronically challenged, I'll need to find a detailed resource on how to make this (my heart's version). Whenever I'll find out, I'll post another tutorial, just like the one I made before.

Claude;

  Here's a thought, do you or a friend have an old mobile phone charger?, if cut it out of the plastic and take a look inside there. They don't put out that much power and are already converting the mains to DC. you may need from there to either step up or down depending on the LEDs.

I know that they probably will not be small enough to fit in the MR16's but will fit easili into an old CFL base:--)

This works for us, I play around with NiCds and even though the chargers are not built for them , almost ALL newer charger's outputs are right at 4.2 - 4.9 VDC and running 200mAh.

Some work just fine.

Hope that helps with the need for 220v conversion

That is a LOT better than the 'laptop charger' idea I gave last month!

Thanks Bruce, thanks Glen, I'll consider it. I have several phone chargers I could use, I even have a very tiny 220V to 6V transformer from a rechargeable shaver. I also have old CFL bases. I'll give it a try but right now my mind is on my mini solar system. I'll post it as soon as I'll finish it.
