wire estimate

can anyone give me a guestimate as to how many pounds of wire it would take to make 12 coils using 15gauge wire 4 in hand 40 turns for 2in dia magnets (similar to the steam powered altenator except using round magnets) Thanks for any advice:)

 Ok maybe some things to help you #15 AWG is 101.44 feet per pound.


 So next you're making coils 2 inches in diameter. C= pi x diameter. circumference =6.283 x 40 x4 =1005.309 / 12 83.77 per coil x 12 = 1005.3096 / 101.44 = 9.91 pounds..


 But I'd add in a 10% fudge factor at least so add another bit and I'd say 11 lbs would do it.

Well - the HOLE in your coil should be 2" diamter (ID).

The outer dimension (OD) should be closer to 4" (OD).

OD depends on your magnet spacing.


This coil simulator can help you determine # turns and wire length for a coil of certain dimensions:
