Geno`s Genny
« on: November 08, 2008, 06:46:18 AM »
I am hoping to get some detailed feedback on my plans for a small generator. I have attached some details here: http://www.otherpower.com/images/scimages/11803/. I am planning to make a few test coils but would like some help with wire size, turns per coil, blades, and just a review of my rotor and stator specs to see if they make any sense considering the performance goals I have set for this 150 Watt Pipe Dream. I have completed multiple searches on this site and others and have found the information to be informative, plentiful and overwhelming at the same time. The only parts and materials I have assembled are the magnets. I'm just being cautious before going any further.

Note: In case anyone was wondering, the attached image represents the intended layout for my rotors and stator. I am showing this image to get additional and specific feedback on using round magnets with round coils in the specific dimensions listed.

Your thoughts please...

Geno

Those files are HTML and Power Point files

images need to be in GIF or JPG format

Your links to your images don't work. If you can't post pictures here then why not try telling us about your magnet size and layout.

Unless you give magnet dimensions and details no pictures are going to be any use.

I'm a newbee here, you want to do whatever it takes to make it so Flux can see what you're doing. In two years of watching him answer questions like yours, I think he's either got mystical powers or two hundred years of experience. I can open them with OpenOffice but you need to learn to export jpg's or gif's for the folks here...

Extrapolation from what I've seen, I think you're more likely to get 30 or so watts from something like that. Again, I'm guessing; Flux will give you the right answer. But I think that your magnets are middle-sized and I don't think you don't have much room for wire with that small disk.

I am personally curious though, what you will be using for a hub or bearings?

Thank you,

- Ed.

You seem to be in with a chance with this except for the 75 to 100 W in a 10 mph wind.

You should manage your 250 rpm cut in with something like 60 turns and with care you should get somewhere near #13 wire in there ( make the holes smaller if necessary).Don't let the stator go much over 1/2" thick ( 5/8" absolute max)

The tsr 5 prop at 60" dia should work. I don't like 4 blades but as long as you keep it tsr 5 it will be ok.

You will be able to get your 150W but you will need nearer 20 mph.

I think you will be hard pushed to get 25W at 10 mph.

There is a lot of difference between what you get at 10 mph and what you get from an average 10 mph wind speed for your area. If you have a 10 mph average wind speed then you are well on target to get close to your ideal.

Hello Geno,

Looks like your doing your homework so far. One thing, you say it is to be portable. I assume thats why the size of the discs and magnets, to keep it from being too heavy. Take off a little more weight by making it a 3 blade prop. And don't be discouraged with only 25 watts, 2 amps flowing steady should go along way toward the light loads you describe. If you get it working you could supplement it with a set of HF solar panels that could double your output into a 100 amp hour bank. What is that, like 2 marine deep cycle batteries? Oh, and one other thing, the laptop, blackberry etc. could probably be charged off the battery directly with the appropriate car charger type cord. That would save power loss in an inverter. Good Luck.

My apologies for the image snafu. The board administrator bailed me out and has attached the images in a usable format. Your critique is welcome.

Thanks for the feedback. To answer your question regarding what I intend to use for a hub and bearings, I'm not sure yet, but I intend to keep the weight down by keeping the disc diameter at 8 inches. Hiker used a some type of block bearings on his camper genny a few years ago. I will explore the same. Thanks again...

The details for this rotor and stator setup are listed in my original post.

DanG, thanks for bailing me out by reformatting my images.

My problem is never enough space.

That is bigger than what I try, but might want to check what you can get that fits in what space.

It is a heartbreaker to figure it off by 1/4", because the only suitable bearing has big ears.

People with better tools and equipment have less troubles than I do.

I was hoping you would respond. I have learned allot by reading your responses to Newbies like myself. It's good to hear that I might have a chance at making Geno's Portable Genny a reality. Thank you for being specific in your critique. I now know exactly what my first test coil will be. Thank you.

Thanks for taking a look at Geno`s Portable Genny specs. I appreciate your note of caution regarding bearings. What type of bearings and shaft setup do you use for the small stuff?

You are correct, I am trying to keep the weight down on this setup. I know I will give up allot on the power output potential by going small. I will explore the 3 blade prop, especially since it seems to be the established standard for home-brew mills, be it small or large.

Thank you sir.

Remember I said "That is bigger than what I try".

I use common stuff.  Pillow or flange bearings from eBay.  Bicycle parts.  Electric motor parts.

Do not be suprised if a 5/8" shaft needs 4" ID of space to work as intended in a design.

Things can get very tight at the center quicker than it first appears.

Just a thought for a light weight hub, here's what I do,

http://www.thecasualtraveler.com/my_next_windmill.htm

Made out of easy to get hardware store parts. Prop can be mounted same side as the alt or on opposite sides of the mast. Bearings will wear faster than on a trailer hub but since it's portable their also easy to replace.

For what it's worth.

I like the light-weight nature of the components. This might be a possibility for me. What size prop are you planning for your project Andy?

I have used 5 foot PVC and 6 foot carved wood blades on my current machine built the same way.
