abreviations
« on: March 03, 2008, 02:51:13 PM »
this board uses a lot of abbreviations.

new ones are showing up all the time.

for a new member (or even veterans) they can be a  hurdle.

learning the lingo is difficult and time consuming.

i can't tell you how much time i spent trying to figure out "pwm"

i wonder if it were possible to create a glossary of terms.

edady1;

Yeah, its a true problem. Been in electronics one way or another since I was a kid and I get confused.

The other problem is that some of them mean different things in different fields.

I usually try to ask early after a post if there are terms or acronyms that will be confusing.

I see this on other forums, especially the techy ones. I try to clarify mine but am not always successful.

Like:

If your pieces are stuck I suggest you use a BFH [Big Fat Hammer] to knock them apart.

I am sure I can figure out how to get an acronyms update or even a fresh page installed if someone puts one together.

The start would be to compile a list of the common ones in use here now. PWM, etc. See, I can't even think of a couple offhand so I used the one you mentioned.

The list could include common terms, also. Stator, Yaw, cut in, and a pile more I haven't thought of just now.

Another of those documents we can put together in the hope folks use them.

JacquesM built a program that parses webpages and creates links to other user submitted internal documents describing terms used in the page. Perhaps there will one day be a way to feed the Fieldlines page to that to provide links to definitions. It was quite interesting.

Pretty much impossible to integrate into current software here so would not be likely to see that as a Fieldlines display option under the current setup.

But the idea of a database of terms and acronym is a good one.

Hopefully we can pull something together that folks will use.

thanks for the link kurt.

i will put it in my bookmarks.

now i have been coming here for something like 4 years and this is the first i've

heard of it .

is that my fault. or the boards?

now i don't want danb to get back from central america and think

i've been kicking his dog.(this site)

i think it's great.

to me this site is the Internet.

i only had a computer for about a month before

i found and joined this site.

i think it's important.

(in some sort of global /social consciousness /survival sense)

or what ever!

i don't think even dan imagined there would someday be 10,000 members.

at the rate it's growing will there be 20,000 in two years?

i don't think even flux could answer that many questions.

and tom will be downright crusty i'm sure !

i don't know how to do it but there might have to be some sort of reorganizing of all this information.

Technical abbreviations are not so bad, put pwm into google and you get it on the first hit. Similarly for mppt and other things.

Man's idiosyncrasies are more difficult, it took me years to crack LOL and there are others that I just don't get at all, even RTFM doesn't seem to be that well understood.

There are also differences in name of many things from nation to nation, Amp gauge, ampacity and similar I find strange so many of you may struggle with ammeter. The VOM ( presumably volt-ohm meter) is totally strange to me as we were brought up with an AVO.

Probably a good idea to have a list of common basic technical terms and it would help with other things if people were more specific with information especially where it is related to a manufacturer that may only be known in a local area.

IMHO, abbreviations and technical terms that are known to be unfamiliar to newbs (like me) should be in the FAQ's. I know many newbs will demand answers to basic questions without looking at the FAQ first, but...
