batter y charging from 28 V generator
« on: April 17, 2006, 07:54:04 PM »
Charging a bank of golf cart batteries in series to deliver 24VDC to a large  inverter (see my other post)

Is it that simple? The alternator puts out 28V, rated at 60 amps, designed for use on HUMVEES.

Can i just attach it in series to my battery bank, will it charge the four 6V batteries evenly?

What else d oi need to know?

Thanks

dave

Just be aware that an car alternator has a field current for the rotor.  If you have that hooked to the battery and the alternator isn't spinning, then you will draw about 3 amps but you won't produce any power therefore you will slowly drain your battery bank.  So, the thing to remember is to only supply field current when the alternator is spinning at a decent speed.
