DC Well Pumps
« on: April 04, 2008, 05:44:17 PM »
Hi All

Getting ready to install a solar well pump system and am down to two finalists for a pump system: a Sunpump SDS-D 128 and a Shurflo 9300.

All things being pretty equal as performance goes: Who has what and how happy are you with your choice?

I lean a bit more to the Sunpump as it is constructed of stainless and bronze vs. Polymer casing and such with the Shurflow.

The Sunpump is just a bit more expensive at $665 vs $591 for the Shurflo.

Now, YOUR thoughts? Any other pumps that are on your radar screen?

Briefly, my well to storage tank is 125 ft TDH, a six inch casing,  and I can readily pump 700 gallons at a stretch at a little better than 12 gpm at just about any time of year.

Thanks

Mike

I went with the sunpump. It only gets used every few days to pump water up from a hand dug well for summer garden watering but it seems to be working well. The main reason I choose the sunpump was the dude at sunpumps I talked to convinced me the shurflo was a piece of junk but then again he was probably a little biased.

That would be Rob, I believe. Definitely knows his product! I put a mark in his column after talking to him.

We didn't discuss the Shurflo, but I tend to shy away from the plastic casing approach, rational or not.

Thanks

I know a few people had what I would consider quite bad luck with some Shurflo's of different models.  Enough bad luck where I myself wouldn't ever consider anything from Shurflo.

Lorentz make a nice pump. Very low current draw, all stainless and the controller can be used solar direct or battery. Take a look at the PS200 series. Cost a little more but bang for the buck the best I've come across.

I've been running a shurflo 9300 with a 12V 120 Watt panel, and from 120 feet I get over a gallon a minute into a storage tank, and I'm planning to add a pond in my little desert retreat. That Plastic casing worked without a hitch for over six years. Eventually a seal failed, most likely due to my so-so cable attachment. Using plastic hose makes installation and removal a 2 man job, no heavy equipment needed. I've had no problems with a Shurflo booster in my 20 year old RV (I only replaced it a few months ago, with another Shurflo.) I am adding  a 80 gallon well tank after the storage tank with the shurflo in between. House Water, Whoo Hoo!
