Hi Doug,

You posted a link to a photo of a little 20", 20 magnet, 20 coil mill.

Well, at least me and johnlm want to know more about it.

Everything you have to tell!

well, what is there to tell. . .

The bearings are the motor from an old 5.25 inch hard drive.

The magnets are from maxtor hard drives.  Those little kidney--bean shaped magnets that have only one pole on each face. (takes 4 of them per drive instead of two like with others.

Those magnetsa re mounted on the teeth of a 5 inch circular saw blade.  20 teeth, 20 magnets. . .

The coils (20 of them) are centered on the magnets.  The blade and the thing it is mounted to is the armature of the 20" box fan.

It is two sets of 10 coils in series, wired together parallel.

It'll put out about 40VDC in a stiff wind.

It is keeping two 6V golf car batteries charged at a remote cabin. (cabin has a incandescent over the sink and a flourescent over the table and that is all it does, but works great.

Keeps those batteries at 12.8V after the weekend drain to about 12.3. . .

Anything else?

Doug,

Thanks for the info.  I think we are just curious about some of these smaller mills.

Ive made several smaller mills in the 2 to 4 ft diameter prop range, but Ive made the alternators out of converted fractional horsepower (20 inch box fan, 1/15 hp) motors, or small blower motors(1/6 hp).  I was just curious as to how different approaches compare, and there are not that many reports on smaller alternators.

How many turns in each coil and what guage of wire did you use.

Sorry if you already stated this back before; but what did you use for the prop? The box fan blades?  Did you carve the blades?  Is your alternator a single rotor?  it sounds like it.  If so did you use any laminates or steel backing behind the coils?  Maybe a picture would be nice if not too much trouble.  Sounds like a nice little unit.

Like John said... then more.

How many windings or turns?

What gauge and ohms?

How 'good' is the wind?

How high is the tower?

Is it a 20" window fan blade?

Are you saying 7/8 X 3/8" neo mags?

(I would not know a Maxtor from a Chevy)

The coils look totally exposed. Is there a core?

And the stator looks cast.

Those 2 are a contradiction I think.

""...and that is all it does, but works great.""

That is what we are trying to do!

With some difficulty I might add, for myself.

Not sure how John is doing.

Tiny is hard for many of us, but you seem to have it down.

And the link is not working right now.

I did this from memory of a single photo.

I really want to know!!!
