Tiny Rotors
« on: October 03, 2009, 05:19:10 PM »
Here is a start of a new toy project I am working on.

It will be a 20 Pole 15 coil 3 phase axial flux machine.

Shooting for a 12V system. Wire from old degaussing coils about 26ga or

I have a spool of 32ga if the bigger wire won't fit. I figure a gap of .15" as

the magnets are .06" thick.

I am planning to use an old spinning reel for the drive section with

blades attached instead of the crank. Thinking 18" swept area.

Hey Ben (gotwind) are you seeing this?  :)

Hi Thurmond.

I can't see how you can get 15 coils in there?.

Board member frefdx made me a 6 coil stator, dual rotor and that must have been a challenge, full story here.

It's fun trying these small in size projects, but as flux always tells me, efficiency goes way down at such a scale.

The best one I made was this 2 pole design, 10 watts at a push

Good luck.

that looks like a fun project.

What are you planning to use for blades?

One of the board members (richhagen) has some small blades I plan to use when I receive them.

Story with the blades is here:

Once again its a toy and it will be a challenge to get 15 coils in the space available.

Nobody noticed my big mistake. Look at the left rotor in the picture. Yep, 21 instead of 20 magnets.

Since this will be very low power I am thinking of trying to "print" a stator (etched printed circuit board). It might be more fun than winding and wiring 15 tiny coils and potting them.

Magnets are .06" thick and .19" diameter N45 grade.
