voltage booster

hi


i have made a 8' hugh piggot wind turbine.

but our area is low wind region , so i want to make a voltage booster (doubler) to fulfill my reqirement.


if anyone try this please help for this.

If you have built the turbine accurately to the plans you will gain nothing with a voltage booster. It should work well in low winds as it is.


Either you have not done something right or you have no useful wind. If you have no wind you can play with all the tricks in the world and it will not help.


If you have useful wind but have done something wrong such as used the wrong number of turns or too large an air gap then a boost converter may help.


If it is the 5 phase machine you will need a conventional boost converter with mosfet, inductor and diode. If you have wound the machine for 3 phase then the 3 mosfet boost converter using the winding inductance will be a better choice. I gave some basic details in a diary entry called matching the load but it was a while ago and I wouldn't be able to find a link to it.

If you look at the first diagram you'll see that there's an extra diode drop in the charging path.  Much power waste.  The other diagrams show no-extra-voltage-drop solutions but use extra FETs.


If your FETs are significantly more expensive than your diodes you can modify the first circuit by adding a second set of positive-side bridge diodes.  One set feeds the battery, the other feeds the FET.


Similar transformations can be done on the other circuits - which end up reducing to nearly the same thing.

here wind is well ,


sometimes i get upto 20 A in high winds,


but in normal wind the voltmeter shows below 9 volts, that i want to boost in normal wind .


in our region there is normal wind .


please suggest me possible things

What is "normal wind"?


Do not fall into the trap of trying to get power from winds under 6MPH.

Been there. Done that. It don't work.  

I don't try for less than 7MPH anymore, and 7MPH is rare here.

 Ahh but those lower winds are so much fun the try with:-) This coming from a place where we can't even put up a Lawn ornament any higher than 10 feet :-(


You are correct for serious power though. Maybe WilliB will chime in on where he's at with his tests.

I would love to see him post the results with a cap between the batt and rectifiers. Again.

I like the idea, and it works for small batts.

For a little power extraction at lower wind speeds wouldn't a simple capacitor/diode doubler help?  The normal bridge would be in place for full power, but a simple passive doubler might get a little value out of borderline winds for a trickle charge?


I've sketched out a simple 1 cap + 2 diodes per phase design that I might have to try with my MotorWind depending on its generator characteristics, and I can put up a link if anyone is interested.
