ST Generator Head Issue
« on: September 22, 2008, 07:04:05 PM »
I'm still banging my head against the wall with this generator.

I have a Changfa 13 hp diesel engine coupled to a 7.5 KW ST Generator head...

Here are the details...when it is running....

  1.       Hooked up for 220v
  2.       U1 to ground produces 110v
  3.       U2 to ground produces 110v
  4.       U1 to U2 produces 220v (so far so good, eh?!)
  5.       I am still using the stock `doghouse' on the 7.5 kw ST Generator head. U1 and U2 are connected to the bus on a dedicated circuit panel.
  6.       When a load is applied, U1  to ground reads 220v and U2 to ground reads 0! And my kilowatt reads nothing at the outlet connected to the circuit panel.
  7.       When the load is removed, it goes back to the levels in steps 2,3,4

I bought this style set up for it's reliability...the wifey is about to have my head!!

Am I missing something with my setup?

Thanks in advance.

Chuck

Is the load using 120v?  or 240?

Check your diodes and caps.

Try hooking your load between U1 and NEUTRAL, not GROUND.

You might want to have a look at this site:

According to the site Tritium pointed to, Neutral is the jumper between U3 and U4.

Are you using the genny for a 240v load, too, or just 220?  If just 220 you can boost the current by reconnecting the genny so the two output windings are in parallel rather than series.  From the diagrams that's U1&U3 jumpered as one side, U2&U4 jumpered as the other.  But try it by jumpering U1&U3 then checking that you have 120 between that and either of U2 and U4, and only a couple volts between U2&U4, before closing the jumper between U2 and U4.

Of course that SHOULD read:
