MR16 48 3528 SMD LED Bulb, which power supply?
« on: August 29, 2010, 03:08:39 AM »
Hello, my name is Mauricio, I'm from Brazil, and I'm new to this forum.

I have a little problem with a led bulb i bought in ebay, came from China.

Here are the specs:

48pcs 3528 SMD LEDs
Base: MR16
Warm white
Input: 12V
Power: approx. 9W
Diameter: 50mm
Height: 38mm
Luminous flux value: 200LM
Color temperature range: 3000K
Life: 50,000 hours

Well, I tested all bulbs (I bought 4) and all is working.
But after few minutes, the bulbs starts to fail. Not complete failure, something like blink, like down and up light.

I'm using a 100 to 240v power supply, 12V and 1A DC output.
1A is fine for this bulb, right?
I don't think it is defective bulbs, because it happens in all of them.

Do i need to use specific led power supply for these bulbs? Or my power supply is just not enough?

Any help, much appreciated!

Maurício.

that power supply is enough for 1 bulb at a time that is it. each bulb draws 750milliamps at 12v

Thank you Kurt.

It is 9/12 right?
Maybe the power supply is not supplying what is writen on it? :D
Or worst, the bulbs are defective?

if i read this correctly, kurt is right.  the bulb pulls 9watts, and your power supply only pushes 12 watts, so one bulb should work well, but not two at the same time.

if only one bulb is hooked up, does it act odd?  or is it only when multiple bulbs are plugged in at the same time?

It acts odd with only one bulb plugged. I didn't hook up more than 1 at same time.

Well, i tested it with a computer ATX power supply and it works fine, no flaws.
So, IT IS the power supply I was using. The power supply is not good or I need to buy 12v 2A or something?

12vdc Wall-Wart power supplies are known for putting out 17 volts or so. If you can, measure the output from your power source.

I tested with multimeter the output power without the bulb, it is 12v~12,3v.
I tested with the bulb plugged and the variation it's 8 to 12v...i think that's bad quality power supply, gonna try some other in stores, well, if i find one who let me try.

Thanks!

I wouldn't trust wall wart power supplies either. I have 4 12v battery powered fans by "O2 Cool" that came with wall adapters if you didn't want to use batteries.

The wall adapters on all 4 burned out within 1/2 to 1 hour. Walgreens marked the fans down to half price to get rid of them after that. The fans pull about 5 watts on low but even that fried the wall adapters. I didn't take any back becuase I have extra printer power supplies that have no trouble running them, plus I use my 12v bank to run one at home.

I would use a small 12 volt battery even an old junk car battery
those bulbs have got to cost some money?
