What did I fry???
« on: November 20, 2010, 01:08:40 PM »
I have a couple of the $10 12vdc 'under cabinet' fluorescent lights from Home Depot, Lowes, etc.  When using AA batteries the inverter is protected from reverse polarity but not when using external power. :'(

I've searched every database I could find but I can't find the specs on this:

A bit hard to make out in the picture:
H           T
8(?). then some number or letter obliterated by the eruption, then what looks like a 2
4DA5AP

Any ideas?
Thanks

Was it heat sunk (doesn't look like it)?... can you post a picture of the circuit and where it was ? as tight in as you can get

I cross referenced it every way I could think of, with no luck.
May be a house numbered device.

Look inside the others, if possible, and see if they have different numbers.

It is a $10 light?
If the part is not super common, probably cost $10 to get the part in your hand.

Everything you said G-
I tried every cross reference I could think of... bupkis!

I'll open the other up and have a look.

I would probably never buy the part... too expensive.

I might just head to Dollar Tree and pick up 3 of the LED tap lights, harvest the LEDs and fit those in the housing.

Thanks for the help folks.

I have a coupla styles of those lights here. made by the same people but one is a few years older then the other one.

This is the older one it has 1 of those parts labeled as 3GA5P

This is the newer one and has 2 of those parts labeled BD237

I suspect that the number on your part is BDA5AP
Also Walmart has those lights for about $7 in the lighting department in with the replacement fluorescent bulbs.

I think Woof gets the award a simple NPN transistor

Thanks for that woof... your first picture is an almost exact replica.

Allan, the BD237 clearly shows up on Google as an NPN but I couldn't find anything on the 3GA5P.  You're fairly sure it's an NPN?
Not that it matters much.  I only use one at a time plus a recent event caused me to toss most of the 3 dozen or so circuit boards I usually keep around to harvest parts from.  Although I'm certain I could start collecting again ;)

Thanks again everyone!

got one of these from Walmart and worked fine with a 3.9 amp/hr.----13.5v NiCad until it dropped below working voltage.
and went out but recharged battery and wouldn't turn on.....
BTW it is supposed to be an 8watt so the 3.9 amp/hr should last longer than couple hrs. ?

I know this thread is pretty much dead, but wanted to see if I could 'extract' anything from the picture...

Gave it a shot - played with the curves etc in GIMP and came up with these two... had better success making the blowhole stand out than the lettering, but maybe someone can identify it. I didn't have much luck either with what I came up with.

If nuttin else, they shore are purdy... LOL

The size of the project matters not.

From what I posted above, I would say it's a -B- without even looking at the picture. But those picture sure do look cool !!

I have one of the older style AmeriTac fluorescent lamps. The transistor on mine is a NEC 2SD882.

RepairFaqs has a schematic of the board.

http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/amtac1.gif

One of the things I liked about the older model is that you can turn up the tombstone shaped rheostat that's behind the switch using a jewler's screwdriver and it will drive the tube harder. Use a MA meter to monitor check the current as you go. If I recall, they only run around 350ma stock which is around 4.2 watts. I brought my remaining one up to 500ma (6 watts) which is adequately bright and it's been working for over 2 years like that now. Try not to go over that because I cranked my first one up all the way to full power and it burned out after half an hour.

Thanks for that yuandrew!  I'll have to look the specs up and see if I can substitute.

Interesting pics Mad... thanks for the effort!
