Still making lamps with 3 PB LED lights
« on: April 15, 2011, 11:34:04 PM »
Well here I am still making those lights.....
but assembling them a little differently....

After taking off all the parts.....
this is the top of the things, after unbending the battery
contact tabs, I pull them up and set them aside still
connected to the triangular PC board.

peeling off the disk on the sticky tape.....
this is the part that makes it really simple to
assemble.

then laying them around in a circle and connecting the
tabs by crimping the ends together......
then some hot glue to hold the PC boards on...
a 100 ohm resistor between 2 and 3

connected  the beginning and end wires to 12 volt Ni-Cad
thats it.....total cost $3 not including battery or hot glue.

I think I understand what you're doing... kind of hard to tell with the blur.

I've never taken any of my Dollar Tree led tap lights apart yet.  The top is glued on right?

Looks cool!

Should work fine due to the hot glue.

Yes the top is glued around the edge ....just run a small knife between  edges of the top
and bottom pieces.
Sorry for the blur....so you just figure the + and - of each tab and each unit is in series
with the other and  100 ohm resistor in series between the 2nd and 3rd unit.
make sure you have the 100 ohm resistor and you  probably won't blow $3 .
hook up to battery with one of the pushbutton switches off then turn on ready to turn off
quickly just in case....but the 100 ohm resistor seems to work for me I use almost 14 volt
of NiCad been working for me for quite a few months.....every night 2.5 amp/hr battery drops a
little over a volt in 8 hrs.
You can use the plastic part of the package for a weatherproof cover even.

Time don't permit me to tell you the number of oopsies I've had ,but the key to sucess
is that 100 ohm resistor.

Yes ...due to hot glue they come apart and liable
to short out,if you don't,....of course you do this before you hook it
up to the battery....LOL....I didn't ....dumb me a small blister about
the size of a bee stinger smarts for awhile about like a bee sting.
dumb dumb dumb !

Hi Norm...I like that set up, I'm using leds for light as well. Mine are hooked parallel without a resistor . Does hooking them in series make the battery last longer??  I have two different sets of leds one set is like yours, the other set is out of one of those ball caps that act like a miners helmut light.
Think I'll give it a try ,unless you or someone else has already tried it and it didn't work..........thanks Norm good thread......artv

Yes the newer ones that I have are hooked parallel without a resistor.....that's because they are intended to be used
with 3 alkaline batteries now when you hook these 3 units in series to a 12-14 volt NiCad without the
100 ohm resistor in line... very good odds all 9 LEDs will blow.
(If you were to use AAA NiCads in place of the AAA Alkaline batteries your chances of blowing the LEDs
might happen.....Alkaline and NiCads ....2 different animals when using them to light LEDs)
Each one of these 3 PB units are still left parallel ,only the units are in series with the other 2.
and hooked to a 12volt NiCad battery.

I've hooked up these PB lights in series so I could run them from a 12 volt NiCad source
with the minimum amount of effort and expense. and able to be recharged.
3 of these LEDs hooked in series to 4.5 volts would be very dim.

I thought maybe a sketch would be clearer than the blurred picture

So it's hooked up like this red and green  ....positive and negative.
thoughts of mounting these on play dough so you could adjust the
angle of each one to make a specific light pattern fix them permanetly
with hot glue after the play dough dries.
