How many amp hours?
« on: January 29, 2012, 05:42:19 PM »
So I scored a couple batteries. They are workaholic 8dxhd batteries. Spec sheet reads as follows:
Amps: 1445
Cranking Amps: 1445
Cold Cranking Amps: 1155
Voltage: 12
Termination: A
Weight:122lbs
Width: 11
Length: 20.75
Height:9.63

So how do I fightre the Amp hours?

You'd ask the manufacturer, or search for it. I estimate (based on prior experience) around 190 amphours.

I would say that it's a starting battery and so you really shouldn't discharge them very low at all if you want them to last more than 6 months

The rule of thumb I picked up was that, as suggested above, if the battery quotes CCA (cold cranking amps) then it's not suitable for deep cycling as suggested above.  Car batteries for running the starter and lights, and deep-cycle batteries for long-term storage, are two different animals.

Ok. Thanks guys. Even though I got them for free, I don't want to destroy them. I guess I am going to have to find some other batteries.

Hey Free is Free  ;D
Since these are startup batteries, YOU can still use them. Just know that they should be used to learn and emergencies ONLY.
Are they in fairly good working order?
What do you intend to use them for?
The best thing you can do to lengthen their life is to make sure you do not draw more than 20% of their usable Ahr.
These are heavy-duty style batteries (Truck /Bus types).
I would hazard a guess that this large heavy battery will give you about 100Ahrs MAX, so 20% that would be usable which you should return post-haste  :D

BUT the better thing to do would be to get in touch with Interstate and ask them the total Ahr rating of these.
I'm sure an email or phone call would get you the answer in quick order.
Cheers;

Those are the same batteries I got in every piece of heavy equipment I own.  I've never seen where Interstate Battery provides an ah rating for them.  But I know that two of them will power everything in the sleeper in my Freightliner FLD120, including lights, TV set, heater and fans for three days and still start a Cummins N14-525E at zero degrees F.

They are semi common in larger RE systems around here, which are a lot smaller than most of what 'we' call 'larger'.
I have seen quotes for similar to those of 255AH, and 450 minute reserve capacity at 25A.
Probably similar to a pair of 6V golf cart batteries.

Free is good.
I'd try to keep them above 12.2V all the time, just in case.

I agree with Bruce, I wouldn't discharge them (regularly) more than 20% of their rated AH. They're designed for starting, not using overall power. They'll work, but not for a long time if you discharge them deeply.
