Solar 20'' Box Fan
« on: May 16, 2010, 07:32:25 PM »
Ok I am trying to post in my diaries for the first time on the new board. So if it's in the wrong place. Fill free to move it.
I am in the process of taking an older model Toyota car apart to get the motor and other parts to play with.
It ran good but smoked a little when you first started it. This was years ago when I parked it down by the lake in the woods.

Any way, I did get the motor out and on the ground. I ran out of time so I did not have much to bring home on the first day at it.
I did get the radiator fan. It had broken blades ( From years ago I would drive it in the woods) The fan motor still ran good.
I have a 20'' box fan that the motor went out in. Well, that car fan motor fit right in where the 120 volt motor was in the box fan. With a little work I got the box fan blades on the DC Motor.
The guards when back in place so you can't tell it's a DC Motor. The bad part is it pulled 8 amps at full speed. The good part it would blow your shirt off.
I have been using a heater coil to adjust the speed of my solar ceiling fan but I have advanced some since then. I have been studying how to build a PWM for my HHO project ( That's what the car motor is for) I had build a simple PWM to replace the heater coil on my ceiling fan but never put it on.
I tried it on the NEW Solar box fan. It is working great. I used a mosfet out of a TV and other parts out of anything I could get my hands on. PWM is really simple if you study them. I will try to add some photos if I can.

thought about building a hho canister for my f150-not sure on how many plates im going to use yet....
built a small hho canister a while back--just two small plates--pluged that into my batt charger..makes gas!!--about 7-10 amp draw..
watched a few u tube vids --they claimed anywhere from 20-50percent incress in mpg..
all depends on the number of plates you use--or some even use spiral wire-interlaced..some use plain water-others add bakin soda..
be careful if you do make one--damm things are dangerouse !! never new just how explosive plain water could be-and a little goes a long way........................................

What circuit did you use?

I would be a little concerned about a TV fet with 8A.  Most are rated for high voltage and low amps.
At least put a heat sink on it?

Hiker
I have built several types and sizes of HHO units. Different count plates and so on.
I tired different neutral plates count also.
It comes down to you have to play with it to get it at it's best with what you have. One is in a 5 gallon bucket. (Testing)
The plates are like 1 ft by 16 inches. It has seven plates + - + - + - +. It pulls around 100 amps.
Man It makes the gas. Yes, HHO is very explosive.
I am going to set the motor up with a Vapor / Woodgas crab. Two valves is all it is.
You can use that crab with HHO, gas vapor or Woodgas. I built a Woodgas gen out of a 55 gallon drum.
It works great. My plan is to run the motor with gas vapor and HHO mix.
I can't say anything about one in the f150 except. I heard that you can tune it down enough to damage the motor.

Yes, You are right but it was what I had to work with, and My first try at building a PWM.
2 resistors, 1 pot, 1 five volt (thing) 1 mosfet
I run it at 3 amps max continuously. Plus, I put at fan on it. I ran it several hours last night. ( 2 amps )
The bottom of the box was just warn. I have it laying on the bottom of the box.

This will be my next project too. I have an old fan with burnt out motor and was planning to use a treadmill motor like CmeBREW did.
(I can't seem to be able to find that story)
He was claiming a really low current draw with the treadmill motor.

I was planning to build a PWM speed controller like samoapower posted
http://fieldlines.com/board/index.php/topic,128905.0.html
but you guys seem to be talking about an even simpler controller.

I also know of these other PWM speed control circuits . . .

Hey woof,

Google "5000% efficient fan cmebrew".  Google sees it, but it must be semi-lost.  Which is strange because I looked at it a week or 2 ago.

I was at the shop a month ago tinkering with something unrelated to fans, but used the breadboarded PWM circuit for the box fan I posted.
It is not Samoa's circuit.
It is Tony van Roon's in the link above (sentex-pwm555), except MBR1645 was changed to a 3A 60V Schottky, and BUZ11 was changed to IRFZ44N.

Anyway.  Go for it!  Almost unimaginable the treadmill motor can turn itself with that drop of power, let alone spin the blades.

Edit / PS-  It will not show up, but here is where cmebrew's fan "was"-

Basil,
I am not sure I follow what you did, but it sounds like some sort of linear regulator.
Best I can figure is the circuit runs the fet linearly.

WOLF
If thats the story with the white fan on a stand made with a treadmill motor,
It was nice and did not use much power at all like Ghurd said.

Ghurd
I used a ( I think ) a 5k pot, 2 1k resistors, A 5 volt power ( thingey ) and the 8 amp mosfet.
All I know is it works.
I will sent you a lay out of how it's wire / made. Then you can let me know what it is.
