Slip rings for wind turbines
« on: March 06, 2012, 04:10:53 PM »
Has anyone come up with a reliable design for wind turbine slip rings so you don"t have to worry about the lead wires coming down the tower getting twisted and possibly failing??  Any pictures and input would be great..  Thanks, Duff  Bio Diesel Man

I wouldn't (shoot you) - my 1kW machine went up 23/Feb/2006 and is still running fine, sliprings and all. Thats 6 years so far and no sign of distress either.

Actually....mine has brushes opposing each other with threaded rod and a coil spring for tension....so i have two brushes per ring...

Cdog I can probably help make your link work, if the URL starts with "board.fieldlines" there is a workaround im using. This error makes the page go to the index of the board, anything posted in that timeframe has this directory error, post the link here, "even if it points to the "index page.

My slip ring at a bottom of a tower for easy access 2 years no problem hope to stay that way.
It is nylon housing with brass rings and fingers ,spring loaded ,pact  with silicone grease(electrical).
Inside shaft runs on 2 bearings so it is ease to turn even trough is not spinning a lot, cable absorbs some twist.
Going to 48v allows you to use smaller slip rings and .My brass on brass setup works good and not damaging rings or fingers .

I've got slip rings from a farm pivot irrigator.  You might be able to find a used one from a farm irrigator company, lots of them here in the midwest.  Rated at 600VAC and high amps.  You can see pictures in my "User Diary";  "My 17' So Far"
