It was Fun While it Lasted
« on: July 19, 2004, 08:20:51 AM »
Well, folks;

As of today I am removing myself from my post as editor on Fieldlines.

I am doing this because I do not feel I can actually make a difference any more in the direction I see the board taking. This is not a sudden decision. I have been considering it for a couple months and have decided I just cannot continue in good faith and maintain my objectivity and fairness in the position. We seem to have lost the bulk of the brilliant folks that used to post here in the last couple years, also

I will, however, occasional post stuff to my diary to keep those who are interested current on what I am doing in my projects.

Actual participation in the board discussions themselves seem to just cause hard feelings from either misinterpretation, or my pointing out what i feel are unworkable ideas. My calling a steaming pile of manure exactly what it is seems to upset folks, also.

I have given it my best and have acted in good faith from the start but the writing on the wall is very clear, it is time to surrender to the masses that have taken over the board and tender my resignation. It is the users board and I seem to be in the minority so I am backing out and backing off at least from the editors position.

I wish you all luck in your projects. There are no hard feelings on my end so please  don't be offended on your end.

Cheers.

That goes for me too Tom deepest respect for your feelings and opinions...usually on a close parallel with my own.

Geez Tom I hardly knew ya, I have to say that my limited exposure to you here has been uniformly positive. Perhaps as a newcomer I missed the "cre'me da la cre'me" of the postings ( though I read through the archive extensively).

I will say that it seems in the last two months or so the board has slowed down, which I attributed to every one making hay while it was warm.

Please DON'T be a stranger.

Thankyou Tom for what you've done!  You've done some good things here (it's your fault I think that were using Scoop!! - and the board is better for it!).

I hope, and have a feeling you'll stick around as a user anyhow and post comments as you see fit.

The board is sometimes tricky.  We tend to move things along slowly I know...

All I can say is thanks so much... and have fun!

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

Sorry to see you vacate that responsibility but I understand your frustration.  While I am somewhat sympathetic to the "don't be critical, everyone was inexperienced at one time" philosophy it does get frustrating answering the same questions over and over to someone that won't do a bit of their own research or reading on the subject.  I am also a believer in telling it like it is, and if the misinformed can't handle it, it is their problem. It gets frustrating trying to explain to someone over and over what copper wire is. Many of the more informed members seem to be very patient explaining simple concepts repeatidly.  Sometimes I think some people are lucky that most of the voltages present in these projects are relatively safe (below SELV) or many of these folks would get electrocuted - if they ever produced any power at all.

Look at it this way, now you will have more time to have fun playing around with new projects.  Thanks for your efforts.

TomW,

I've only been hanging around here since last summer but the board has given large amounts of know-how both on what works and what doesn't.

Even though I never had the pleasure to meet you, you seem like a helpful, knowledgeable guy.

Maybe you can have some more fun with the board and a few less headaches as a regular member - I'll look forward to reading about your projects as they develop.

A pat on the back for a job well done!

Ted.

Sorry to see you go (as editor) Tom. I for one have enjoyed your posts. If you're like me I'm sure you will lurk around, as this board is to much to resist. And thanks go to to the otherpower folks and Hugh Piggott for motivating me to build several axial windmills.

Well, guys;

I sure hope someone grabs the reigns here soon because if they don't I expect it to become fairly useless in short order with folks flooding the front page and comments with useless or unworkable information, rehashing the same simple questions and searching for machinery parts all pushing the good info into obscurity. All because most of you are far too nice to tell them to do a little research on their own and spoon feed them the info that is easily found with a bit of effort. But its not my problem anymore so I'll leave it at that.

To those of you who responded so far to this diary you have my heartfelt thanks for your supportive comments.

I will still pop in from time to time after i spend some time on other things just to see how it is going.

Cheers.

You probaly already know this but here goes.

How far you go in life depends on your being: tender with the young,  compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and strong.  Because someday in life you will have been all of these.

And thanks for the help you gave.

Tom, I personally think you have done an excellent job on the board. I have enjoyed our conversations from time to time in the chat rooms and your comments. It is hard knowing what people think behind the machine, so acknowledge your frustrations. I sincerely wish you the very best in whatever you decide to do. May the sun shine upon your panels and the wind to the blades stay high! Good Luck Tom!

P.S. Come back occasionally and give us some hell!! LOL!

TomW,

hey, sorry you are fed up.  I figure I am one of the ones that needs to be "spoon-fed"as you say...  but I also do a good bit of research on my own I guess.  I hate to see someone with your knowledge leave, but if you are not having any fun on the site anymore i understand, I would leave too.  I wish you the best and I hope you regain your love for the sight.  After all, it can't be all bad.

hi tom....when i came home from the northern bush the other day, the first thing i did was get on my puter and come to my favorite website to read.....i was disturbed to read that something had happened to tomw...this prompted me to e-mail a friend and ask if you had passed away or what had happened ....i was relieved to a certain degree when i found out that in fact you hadn't come to a serious injury or worse..and although you leaving saddens me it was better than what i thought had happened.....i am a newbie here but i have had respect for you and am sincerely appreciative of your help...i feel a loss knowing you have decided to move on......i can respect your decision. i want to thank you for your help....and if you are ever in northern ontario canada.....my door is open to you and your family......take care......pickster
