Summer 2004-Need Monitoring Camera
« on: October 15, 2004, 08:56:07 PM »
This summer I had a ball again !!!!  Good weather (no summer they say) and advance some more with the contruction of "THE LODGE"

I spent for April 1st, to  Oct 1st, and had more amenities that last year.

It included the whole house wiring (for 110 Volts and some 12 Volts) and the electrical system that included: 2 12 VOlts deep cycle (Walmart) batteries, one 123 Watts solar panel, a 12 volts Delco alternator mounted on a 5 HP B&S, the Satelite internet provided by StarBand (superb !, unlimited $52/month) and the Dell laptop.

The Delco alternator run once maybe every two weeks just to keep it in shape. The panel was enough for my lights, all the PC work at nite (otherpower.com and a bunch of good friends that I made from the board up there in Ontario)

I dug a shallow well and use the Harbor freight generator for the pumping out of the water.

Buit a "adobe HORNO" and made some pizza (jummmmyyyyy !!!!!!)

I did not finsh the GarboGen that I started with Jerry's Advice, but will have it ready for next year. The creek had close to 50 galons/sec flow most of the time until August that went to 2 to 5 liters/second. Next year I will have the "Bunki"

hydro ready to make at least 50 to 100 watts/hour, which will be much mire than what I need !!.

Next year will also use an electric water heater for the shower (no more heating a big pot on the fire every day), and the installation fo the ShureFlow shallow well pump for 12 Volts operations with presure tnak of 5 or 6 galons per minute.

I like to thank many of the board members (OTHERPOWER.COM) that in one form or another made my summer a succes and lots of fun.

Next year also plan to install a video monitoring system that hopelfully I would be able to monitor from home via internet.

Thanks for reviewing this diary and any comments will be appreciated.

Looks great!

Add wind and hydro, who could ask for more?

I'm affraid those batteries are 'starting' batteries and will not perform as expected. You would surely have MUCH better results with deep cycle (trolling) batteries. ie: 2, 12v G27 100ah... or better 2, 6v golf cart batteries. Both set ups give about 200ah at 12v, will last many more years, and are more forgiving to over-discharge or abuse.

I'd use the 2 6v's. US$46.50 ea at Sams Club, if they infected your area yet.

My rule of thumb, If they list CCA, then its not a true deep cycle, no matter what the sticker on the front says. (however Trojan and a few others now list CCA on some of deep cycles...)

Keep an extra 9v battery for that $4 HF meter. When the battery gets low, it gets goofy. It may say you are down to 8.5v or up to 17v when everything is fine!

An extra battery AND an extra meter seems like an idea!
